The Impact of Prior Tonsillitis and Treatment Modality on the Recurrence of Peritonsillar Abscess: A Nationwide Cohort Study

Abstract: BackgroundStudies suggest an increased risk of peritonsillar abscess (PTA) recurrence in patients with prior tonsillitis. However, this association is inconsistent and could be confounded by different treatment modalities. This study aimed to assess the risk of recurrence among PTA patients with different degrees of prior tonsillitis and treatment modalities, and the role of tonsillectomy in current practice.MethodsAll in-patients with peritonsillar abscess between January 2001 and December 2009 were identifie… Show more

“…Other data of our study were less exciting including the demographic findings which are fully in accordance with other studies concerning a median age less than 40 years [1,21]. A male to female ratio of 1.71 confirms the finding of a male predominance in PTA patients [21,[27][28][29].…”

“…The mean time to recurrence questions the good outcome in our patients as a result of on an inadequately short follow-up. However, Wang identified in 20.5 % a ''residual disease'' (by definition: \30 days) [21] which is a higher rate compared to our study with a followup of 60 days. Our department of Otorhinolaryngology is part of an Academic Teaching Hospital with 17 different disciplines and responsible for a potential catchment area of more than 260,000 inhabitants.…”

“…For the age group between 14 and 21 years, Risberg et al [55] identified the highest annual incidence (124/100,000). In some trials it becomes obvious that mainly male adolescents and adults are affected [56], [57], [58], with a ratio of 3:1 [53], [59]. There are other investigations that do not reveal a gender-related preponderance [49], [52], [53], [55], [59], [60], [61], [62], [63], [64], [65], [66], [67], [68].…”
