Introdução: Por orientação sexual depreende-se como padrão de excitação física e emocional de um indivíduo, incluindo fantasias, comportamentos e atividades, e o(s) gênero(s) a quem um indivíduo é física ou sexualmente atraído. Lésbicas, gays, bissexuais e transgêneros (sigla LGBT) fazem parte de uma minoria que sofre muito preconceito e está sob constante estigma, logo, estão envoltos em diversos estressores Objetivo: Estimar a prevalência da população de lésbicas, gays, bissexuais e transexuais (LGBT) no curso de medicina de uma universidade sergipana; identificar possível desconforto quanto à orientação sexual no corpo discente; descobrir indícios de depressão nos participantes da pesquisa segundo a sua orientação sexual; determinar a relação entre desconforto e o relacionamento social acadêmico. Método: Amostra do tipo conveniência com 142 acadêmicos que assinaram o Termo de Consentimento Livre e Esclarecido e responderam quatro questionários: demográfico, Inventário de Depressão de Beck, Escala de Avaliação do Ambiente Acadêmico Frente às Necessidades da População LGBT e a Escala de Percepção de Suporte Social. Resultados: A minoria LGBT apresentou níveis maiores de aceitação e de percepção de suporte social, porém, quanto ao conhecimento de políticas públicas específicas para eles na academia, ambos os grupos demonstraram desconhecimento sobre o tema. Conclusão: Importante discutir sobre questões de gênero e saúde mental, tendo como finalidade buscar suporte psicológico e social aos que estão sofrendo.

Older adults’ mental health and suicidal tendencies have garnered much attention because of their vulnerability. Few studies have examined the impact of psychological well-being and suicide attempts among older men who have sex with men (OMSM). This study examines the levels of depression and suicidal tendencies among OMSM, factors impacting their mental health, and their likelihood of committing suicide. Descriptive statistics are used to analyze the correlation between depression and suicidal tendencies among OMSM in the United States. We constructed a regression model using relevant data, and scales were selected based on a literature review. The validity and relevance of the control variables were considered. Depression and suicidal tendencies were dependent variables. Data were obtained from the U.S. General Social Survey and analyzed with an ordinary least squares model. There were significant differences between MSM and general groups in depression and suicidal tendency scores ( t = 67.084, 58.193, p < .01). Compared with general groups, MSM scored significantly higher on depression and suicidal tendencies. The regression analysis revealed that sex with men was associated with depression and suicidal tendencies ( p < .01) among older men. This indicates that OMSM generally have higher levels of depression and suicidal tendencies than the general population. Finally, in the intermediary test, the level of depression had a significant mediating effect on the relationship between homosexuality and suicidal tendencies ( p < .01). This suggests that depression intervention can help reduce suicidal tendencies among OMSM.

Originally used to discuss linguistic differences in nouns that were classified as feminine, masculine, or neutral, "gender" was first introduced in the 1950s to refer to a human identity and not commonly used until the 1970s, then by feminist scholars (Bullough, 2003[2]). As opposed to the biological term "sex", gender has developed to be a psychosocial construct (Council of Europe, 2022[9]). However, many use the terms "gender" and "sex" interchangeably (Ibid.). Gender includes how individuals relate to and express their masculinity and femininity. Although variation from strict cisgender identification and attraction has always been in evidence throughout history, social movements demanding rights for same-sex couples and non-traditional gender identities emerged slowly in Western Europe in the late nineteenth century (Schlagdenhauffen, n.d.[10]), and more definitively as a global movement from the Stonewall Riots in New York City in 1969 (Blakemore, 2020[11]). That event, at which police raided a gay bar, initiated the Gay Pride movement, which is now celebrated in numerous countries.Sexuality is now acknowledged as a multi-dimensional concept, which is characterised by complex interactions between physical, emotional and social, historical and even political factors. For example, according to Jourian (2015[12]), it is possible to differentiate between four components of sexual identity:(1) sex, (2) gender identity, (3) sexual orientation, and (4) gender expression. According to Dorlin (2021[13]) who analyses feminist philosophies from the past 50 years, "sex" can be associated with three different concepts: (1) biological sex, which we are attributed at birth (male or female); (2) gender, which corresponds to social norms, roles, experiences and perceptions; and (3) sexuality, which correspond to sexual practices of sexually active individuals.
