The impact of Paenibacillus polymyxa HY96-2 luxS on biofilm formation and control of tomato bacterial wilt

Abstract: The focus of this study was to investigate the effects of luxS, a key regulatory gene of the autoinducer-2 (AI-2) quorum sensing (QS) system, on the biofilm formation and biocontrol efficacy against Ralstonia solanacearum by Paenibacillus polymyxa HY96-2. luxS mutants were constructed and assayed for biofilm formation of the wild-type (WT) strain and luxS mutants of P. polymyxa HY96-2 in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that luxS positively regulated the biofilm formation of HY96-2. Greenhouse experiments… Show more

“…In this study, Bacillus had an extremely significant negative correlation with the R. solanacearum , however, there was no significant correlation between the Pseudomonas and R. solanacearum , which may be related to the effect of soil pH. The strains of Paenibacillus have been widely used for the control of bacterial wilt ( 44 , 45 ). And the Flavobacterium in the rhizosphere of bacterial wilt resistant plants was much higher than that of susceptible plants ( 27 ).…”

“…In the experiments presented in that work, an isolate of Paenibacillus polymyxa was also used. As reported by Yi et al (2019), bacteria of this species, because of their ability to form a biofilm, can have protective properties against plant pathogens.…”

“…Paenibacillus polymyxa has been shown to control various plant diseases and promote the growth of plants (Luo et al, 2018). Yi et al (2019)) showed that luxS promoted biofilm formation in P. polymyxa and enhanced its biocontrol efficacy against Ralstonia solanacearum. Trichoderma harzianum, a filamentous fungus, is well suited to different ecological niches.…”
