The study investigated how mentoring is being adopted and practiced among academics in three universities in Edo State, Nigeria. A survey research design was used. A structured questionnaire was administered to 459 academic staff across the three universities in Edo State. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics and the Binomial test. The study finds that mentoring though not formalized was widely practiced in universities in Edo State. Both senior and junior lecturers agreed that mentoring was very important in teaching the younger colleagues how to better perform their jobs. Given the above findings, the study recommends that universities in Edo State should as a matter of necessity formalize the adoption of mentoring among academic staff thus giving it institutional support to make it more effective with measurable outcomes. Also, a mentoring programme of universities should be structured in a way that would incorporate the uniqueness of the different areas of specialization in advancing mentees' career development.

PurposeFew studies have analysed the determinants of exports in emerging economies, which are critical in the exporting reality of firms. Two variables decisively affect the export performance of firms – their size and their export experience. This paper analyses the relationship between size and export experience in the export intensity of Brazilian firms. In addition, it considers two variables (location and sector) that identify firms in Brazil and could affect their export intensity. This research answers the question of which characteristics of Brazilian companies determine their export intensity.Design/methodology/approachA statistically significant sample of 318 firms is collected from Brazilian exporting companies. Regression analysis is performed, and data describing the relationship between the export determinants and the export intensity of Brazilian firms are presented. Three evaluation models are proposed. In the first, the location and sector variables are considered. In the second, the firm size, firm location and sector are presented. In the third, the firm size, export experience, location and sector are proposed.FindingsThe results of the third model confirm that only export experience is statistically significant. Therefore, there is no relationship between firms' size, location and sector and export intensity for companies in Brazil.Originality/valueThis work shows the organisational characteristics that affect export performance in Brazil from the firm’s perspective; these are aspects that have been analysed less in emerging economies.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the impact of external auditor–cloud specialist engagement on cloud auditing challenges from the perspective of auditors from the Association of Certified Public Accountants in a developing country as an example of Middle East emerging economies. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative research design was used to assess the influence of external auditor–cloud specialist engagement on three main cloud auditing challenges (i.e. technology security, regulatory standards and strategy). Data collection was conducted through field and online surveys. A total of 201 (181 male and 20 female) auditors made up a sample of a developing country’s economy. In addition, structural equation modelling was performed to test the proposed hypotheses of the study’s conceptual model. Findings The study found a significant effect of external auditor–cloud specialist engagement on overcoming the challenges of cloud auditing. Results showed that using IT specialists helps overcome strategic challenges more than other kinds of challenges, such as technology security and organisational standards. Practical implications The findings suggest that efforts to promote cloud auditing in organisations may succeed if the focus is on overcoming cloud auditing challenges and highlighting the external auditor–cloud specialist engagement to enhance job performance. Originality/value This study is one of the few studies that analyse the impact of external auditor–cloud specialist engagement on cloud auditing challenges by adopting a quantitative approach from the perspective of auditors from the Iraqi Association of Certified Public Accountants.
