The Impact of Individual Beliefs and Expectations on BIM Adoption in the AEC Industry

Abstract: The use of Build ing Informat ion Modelling (BIM) in the construction industry has been growing steadily during the last decade, yet there is a continues resistance to its adoption, due to some users' unawareness of BIM benefits. BIM adoption is associated with an individual's willingness towards using it wh ich is driven by indiv idual beliefs and expectations of BIM use consequences. Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) identified perceived usefulness (PE) and perceived ease of use PEOU as variables to inform u… Show more

“…The measurement of SI was developed based on previous studies (Venkatesh et al, 2003;Cimperman et al, 2016), with four items measuring the driving forces from superiors, colleagues and collaborating parities. The seven measurement items of FC were originated from previous studies (Davies and Harty, 2013;Batarseh and Kamardeen, 2017;Ahmed, 2018;Liao et al, 2019) and reworded to suit the context in this study. The measurement items of BI were derived from Venkatesh et al (2012) and reworded to suit the domain of BIM acceptance.…”

“…Resistance to change traditional methods and adopt BIM can be caused by users’ unawareness or dissatisfaction with BIM benefits and advantages (Batarseh and Kamardeen, 2017). This attitude towards BIM was reported by interviewees from four organisations.…”

“…In the context of BIM adoption, construction practitioners usually weigh the cognitive exchange between the advantages provided by BIM and the exertion required to use it. Previous empirical investigations provide evidence for the substantial influence of effort expectancy on the disposition to utilize BIM, as exemplified in studies executed by Bataresh et al [52] and Wang et al [53]. Practitioners' intention to utilize BIM is more likely to increase when they believe it requires less effort to use BIM.…”
