The Impact of Electroacupuncture Early Intervention on the Brain Lipidome in a Mouse Model of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

Abstract: The neuroprotective effect of electroacupuncture (EA) treatment has been well studied; growing evidence suggests that changes in lipid composition may be involved in the pathogenesis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and may be a target for treatment. However, the influence of early EA intervention on brain lipid composition in patients with PTSD has never been investigated. Using a modified single prolonged stress (mSPS) model in mice, we assessed the anti-PTSD-like effects of early intervention using … Show more

“…In the same time, the variable importance in the projection (VIP) values was obtained from each lipid variable to examine the contribution of variables, and the Student’s t -test followed by the adjustment of the false discovery rate (FDR) in multiple hypothesis tests was introduced to obtain the P values of each variable. Lipids with significant differences were identified based on a combination of fold change (> 1.5 or < 0.67), Student’s t -test FDR < 0.01, and VIP > 1 in according to the methods from our previous reports (Xue et al, 2020 ; Zhou et al, 2022 ).…”

“…A total of 56 studies were included, with 19 clinical studies and 37 animal studies. Two studies (Prisco et al, 2013 ; King Heather et al, 2015 ) used ear acupuncture, one study (Wu et al, 2013 ) used scalp acupuncture, one study (Yang et al, 2022 ) used CO 2 laser stimulation, one study (Feng et al, 2019 ) used TEAS, and other studies (Fang et al, 2012 ; Li, 2012 , 2014 , 2018 , 2020 ; Wang et al, 2012 , 2015 ; Hou et al, 2013a , b , 2021 ; Wang, 2013 , 2019 ; Engel et al, 2014 ; Li and Zhao, 2014 ; Zhao et al, 2014 , 2019 , 2020 ; Xie et al, 2015 ; Zheng, 2015 ; Zheng et al, 2015 ; Zhou et al, 2015 , 2019 ; Lu et al, 2016 ; Zhu et al, 2016 , 2022 ; Han, 2017 ; Li et al, 2017 , 2020a , b ; Ding, 2018 ; Oh et al, 2018 ; Zhao Y. et al, 2018 ; Zhao Z. et al, 2018 ; Chen et al, 2019 , 2020 , 2021 ; Liu et al, 2019 , 2020 ; Moiraghi et al, 2019 ; Wei et al, 2019 ; Xue et al, 2019 ; Yu et al, 2019 ; Zhang et al, 2019 ; Zhu and Lu, 2019 ; Alvear, 2021 ; Hollifield et al, 2021 ; Abanes et al, 2022 ; Lee and Pan, 2022 ; Song et al, 2022 ; Sun Y. et al, 2022 ; Zhou C. et al, 2022 ) used filiform needle (detail in…”

“…The stimulation parameters should reflect the amount of stimulation received rather than the amount of stimulation applied, and judging the actual amount of electroacupuncture effect received by animals is difficult. Furthermore, animals mostly receive acupuncture while under anesthesia, whereas patients receive acupuncture while awake, which may have an impact on acupuncture translational medicine (Zhou C. et al, 2022 ).…”

“…There are few studies on the effects of electroacupuncture on sphingolipid metabolism in skin repair. However, other studies have shown that electroacupuncture can regulate the changes of lipid metabolism in mice with post‐traumatic stress disorder, especially the content changes of sphingolipids, glycerides and fatty acyl groups 34 . In the sphingomyelinase pathway, CER is formed by hydrolysis of sphingomyelins in the granular layer of the skin by sphingomyelinase.…”
