The Impact of Demographic Characteristics and Lifestyle in the Distribution of Cystatin C Values in a Healthy Greek Adult Population

Abstract: Background. The aim of the present study was to examine sources of variation for serum cystatin C in a healthy Greek population. Methods. Cystatin C together with basic clinical chemistry tests was measured in a total of 490 adults (46 ± 16 yrs, 40% males) who underwent an annual health check. Demographic, anthropometric, and lifestyle characteristics were recorded. Results. Higher values of cystatin C were observed among males (P = .04), participants aged over 65 years (P < .001), current smokers (P = .001) a… Show more

“…However, our study design does not allow us to draw conclusions about what constitutes these unique environmental factors. Previously reported environmental factors that are associated with cystatin C or mild eGFR reduction are smoking, occupational exposure to lead and arsenic, use of corticosteroids, and thyroid dysfunction . When we adjusted for the traditional risk factors serum cholesterol, diabetes mellitus, antihypertensive treatment, systolic blood pressure, smoking, and decreased kidney function, the association between cystatin C and stroke remained.…”

“…Previously reported environmental factors that are associated with cystatin C or mild eGFR reduction are smoking, occupational exposure to lead and arsenic, use of corticosteroids, and thyroid dysfunction. [30][31][32][33][34][35] When we adjusted for the traditional risk factors serum cholesterol, diabetes mellitus, antihypertensive treatment, systolic blood pressure, smoking, and decreased kidney function, the association between cystatin C and stroke remained. This indicates that other external factors are important for the strong association between cystatin C and incident ASCVD and may also be possible to prevent if identified.…”

“…Literature on sex difference of SCysC is polarized, with most investigators not finding any significant sex difference. 14, 15 Evangelopoulos and associates 16 studied 490 healthy adults and observed higher levels of SCysC in men as compared to women across all age groups. Groesbeck and associates 17 observed 12.7% higher values of SCysC in males than those for females among 719 US adolescents between 12 and 19 years of age.…”

“…For sample size planning, no stratification and approximately normally distributed data for log-transformed cystatin C values and calculated log-transformed GFR values are assumed. The location parameter and standard deviation of cystatin C at baseline are assumed to be 0.9 mg/L and 0.2 mg/L, respectively, based on the publication by Evangelopoulos and colleagues [ 23 ]. Thereby we consider the older patient groups and greater variability because subgroups are pooled and study patients did not represent a healthy population.…”
