The Impact of Commuting Time on Youth's School Performance

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Using Brazilian data, we estimate the impact of commuting duration on students' performance using distance to closest schools as an instrumental variable. In addition, we also use identification through heteroskedasticity, which does not rely on exclusion restrictions, and estimate bounds for the treatment effect in case there is remaining bias from unobservables. We find strong and consistent evidence that duration of commuting has a negative causal effect on academic achievement. Moreover, the rela… Show more

“…We have already referred to many studies discussing the negative eff ect of commuting on life satisfaction. Moreover, it can have negative eff ect on students' academic performance (Tigre et al, 2017). This shows that transportation should be taken into account in policies aiming at promotion of well-being.…”

“…Therefore, 12 articles were included in the systematic review. The reasons for exclusion of studies were: physical activity measured in general and active commute results not specifically discussed [32][33][34][35][36][37]; age >18 [38,39]; no physical activity [40]; study currently ongoing (protocol published in clinical trials) [41]; and study protocol [31]. Figure 1 shows the study selection flowchart.…”

“…É claro que o método fornece estimativas menos confiáveis do que se tivesse uma variável instrumental exógena para ser usada nas estimativas. No entanto, alguns trabalhos empíricos como Emran & Hou (2013), Amorim & Sampaio (2015) e Tigre et al (2017) têm mostrado que a abordagem de Lewbel produz resultados muito parecidos quando comparado com a estimativa obtida com o uso de instrumentos tradicionais.…”
