The amount of total carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions emitted into the environment threatens both human and global ecosystems. Based on this background, this study first analyzed the relationship between gross domestic product (GDP) and CO2 emissions in five West African countries covering the period of 2007–2014 based on a panel data model. Our causality analysis revealed that there exists a unidirectional causality running from GDP to CO2 emissions. Second, after establishing the nexus between GDP and CO2 emissions, we forecast Africa’s CO2 emissions with the aim of projecting future consumption levels. With the quest to achieve climate change targets, realistic and high accuracy total CO2 emissions projections are key to drawing and implementing realizable environmentally-friendly energy policies. Therefore, we propose a non-assumption driven forecasting technique for long-term total CO2 emissions. We implement our bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) sequential algorithm formulation for both the testing stage (2006–2014) and forecasting stage (2015–2020) on Africa’s aggregated data as well as the five selected West African countries employed herein. We then propose policy recommendations based on the direction of causality between CO2 emissions and GDP, and our CO2 emissions projections in order to guide policymakers to implement realistic and sustainable policy targets for West Africa and Africa as a whole.

The focal point of this study is to investigate the impact of total primary energy consumption, gross domestic product, index of industrial production and employment toward the total carbon (CO2) emission in Malaysia from 1986 to 2018. This study employs the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) model in developing the estimation model between dependent and independent variables. The diagnostic model consist autocorrelation, multicolinearity, heteroscedasticity and normality tests were employed in order to test the model whether is adequate or not. The empirical results showed that the total primary energy consumption is the significant factors that affecting the CO2 emissions while per capita real gross domestic product is the least impactful factor in Malaysia. There are positive relationships between the independent variables on CO2 emissions. Therefore, this study suggested that implementing policies are needed in order to developing economy in Malaysia. Adopt new technologies or install solar energy for industries also recommended to control the energy consumption and pollution in Malaysia.

The objective of this study is to examine the equilibrium relationship in the short and long term of energy consumption in Indonesia (ECI) and carbon dioxide emissions in Indonesia (CO 2 EI) for the period of 1980-2014. The dependent variable is environment and CO 2 emissions have been selected as an indicator for this variable while the independent variable in this study is energy consumption. In this study, quantitative method-based methodology has been selected. The quantitative method enable researcher to examine the relationship objectively using numbers, digits, and ratings as empirical evidence. In addition, the researcher used deductive reasoning to present the arguments. Deductive approach was selected because the research aims to test Environmental Kuznets Curve hypotheses and test it within the context of Indonesia and assess whether there is long term relationship between ECM and CO 2 EM. In order to analyse the panel data, this study used statistical techniques. Firstly, descriptive statistics has been used to assess the central tendency of data using mean and standard deviation. In addition, Dickey Fuller test was performed to check stationarity in the data. Finally, ARDL model was developed to check the impact of independent variables on dependent variable. Through time series models this study found that there is long-term equilibrium relationship between CO 2 E and EC. Furthermore, it can be concluded that there is a short-term relationship between the variables also. Finally, in general the results show that EC positively influences CO 2 E in the short and long term.
