The Impact of Climate Change on Rainfall Frequency in Taiwan

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to assess climate change impacts on rainfall frequency in Taiwan. The changes in future precipitation were projected statistically from general circulation model (GCM) outputs. Based on five downscaled GCM outputs [China's FGOALS-g1.0, Japan's CGCM2.3.2, the USA's CM2.0, Canada's CGCM3(T47), and France's CM3] under the SRES A1B scenario, the frequency of the maximum consecutive dry days and maximum 1-, 2-, and 3-day rainfall during 2080 -2099 are evaluated and compared with thos… Show more

“…ET o is regarded as a standard to be followed; therefore, the estimated PE value must be corrected. The quadrant transformation method (Huang et al 2012) was applied in this study for bias correction. Figure 4 shows the quadrant transformation method concept, in which the curve indicates the percentage of time that evapotranspiration is equaled or exceeded during the period of study.…”

“…Some studies indicated that Taiwan's surface temperature will rise in the future (Lin et al 2009;Hsu et al 2011). The temporal precipitation distribution may become more uneven, and rainless days might occur more frequently (Huang et al 2012(Huang et al , 2014a. The changes in hydrologic projections indicate that water resources management in Taiwan could become a challenging task.…”

“…This tough situation makes people often struggle to manage the available water during most of the time in a year [13,14]. In fact, researches showed that Taiwan is facing increased risk of droughts in the 21st century [15] and the regions currently threatened by droughts will be at greater risk in the future [16].…”

“…In addition, the evapotranspiration of PE may need correction. A conversion method, the quadrant transformation method [5,24], is applied here for bias correction. The concept of quadrant transformation method is shown in Figure 4.…”

“…With the models, an assessment of the future climate would be possible [2,3], and the problem of uncertainty may be mitigated by considering multiple models [4,5]. According to the results of the cited researches, the rainfall distribution would be different and temperature would rise under climate change.…”
