The impact of an intensive antimicrobial control program in a Taiwanese medical center

Abstract: This study reports positive responses to intensive antimicrobial control measures among health professionals within a Taiwanese medical center. Following the implementation of the intensive control program, both prescriptions and consumption levels of parenteral antimicrobials were reduced without compromising the clinical outcomes of patients, while the susceptibility patterns of bacterial organisms mostly remained stable. Long-term control of parenteral antimicrobials under such a program may well produce si… Show more

“…A hospital in Italy reported an overall decrease of 8.5% in antibiotic use in the first year following adoption of an antibiotic control programme [24]. A hospital in Taiwan that adopted a policy similar to ours reported a decline of 13.2% in DDD/100 PD for parenteral antimicrobials immediately before and after implementation [25]. A novel feature of our study is that it spans a 9-year period following the implementation of an antimicrobial control policy, allowing an evaluation of the extent to which the provisions have been followed over time.…”

“…For example, the trend of resistance in the intensive care may differ markedly from the general wards. Although there are publications where no impact on antimicrobial resistance rates were reported, 13 , 18 , 40 , 51 the general trend has been that implementation of ASPs has led to reduction of resistance, 50 , 52 - 56 but publication bias cannot be excluded.…”

“…Various studies have evaluated the impacts of antimicrobial stewardship programmes. 8 However, there are few studies on the long-term effects of antimicrobial management in China. In this retrospective study, the effects of national plans on the promotion of the rational use of antibacterial agents in the hospital were assessed by investigating the use of antibiotics from 2011 to 2014.…”
