The Impact of Agricultural Cooperatives on Efficiency and Productivity: Evidence from Olive-growing Farms in West Bank of Palestine

Abstract: Collective action by farmers including the development of cooperatives is regarded as one of solutions to overcome low productivity. This study investigates the impact of agricultural cooperative on technical efficiency (TE) and total factor productivity (TFP) of olive farms in the West Bank of Palestine. Using cross-section data of olive-growing farms in Jenin governorate, we estimated a stochastic frontier production function with inefficiency components. TFP was also estimated by residual approach. We emplo… Show more

“…This echoes the findings of studies that report an insignificant relationship between cooperative membership and farm yield (Hun et al. 2018; Kashiwagi 2020; Mwaura 2014; Shumeta & D'Haese 2016). With respect to the subsequent analysis, the finding of publication bias indicates that we should include the SEPCC variable in Equation () when investigating the sources of effect heterogeneity in the literature.…”

“…Most studies show that cooperative membership increases yield (Ahado et al 2021;Bairagi & Mottaleb 2021;Chagwiza et al 2016;Ingutia & Sumelius 2022). In contrast, some find that cooperative membership has little (Hun et al 2018;Kashiwagi 2020;Mwaura 2014;Shumeta & D'Haese 2016) or even a negative impact on yield (Fischer & Qaim 2012;Neupane et al 2022).…”

“…First, the lack of effective channels to learn about new technologies is why farmers do not adopt them. Technical training provided by cooperatives can spread new technology and teach farmers how to use organic fertilizers correctly [ 23 , 58 ]. Second, agricultural cooperatives can be essential in accelerating the adoption of agricultural technologies.…”

“…For example, regarding technology adoption, Wang et al and Suvedi et al found that farmers who join cooperatives have easier access to advanced technologies and make more rational technology-adoption decisions [ 21 , 22 ]. Regarding technology application, Kashiwagi [ 23 ] found that farmers with cooperative membership were more technically efficient and had more significant technological progress. In general, agricultural cooperatives have advantages in promoting agricultural technologies.…”
