Yield effects of agricultural cooperative membership in developing countries: A meta‐analysis

Abstract: This study uses a meta-analysis to synthesize the effects of agricultural cooperative membership on the yield of crops and livestock. It collects 158 estimated yield effects from 42 studies, covering 19 developing countries. Our analysis finds evidence that there exists positive publication bias in the empirical literature, confirming that researchers and journals have a preference to publish articles that report positive and significant results. After correcting for publication bias, we find that cooperative m… Show more

“…A public meal center facilitated the transformation of arms-length relations between kitchens and distributors into in-house partnerships with farmers. Our study further extends the agricultural cooperatives literature and contributes to a better understanding of the role of a municipality and an agri-food intermediary in the governance process involving producers and kitchens (Lee et al ., 2020; Ma et al ., 2022, 2023). Considering to the institutional context on PFP, still more research is needed to fully uncover different roles and governance structures in agrifood ecosystems.…”

“…Studies have shown that cooperatives help smallholder farmers access input and output markets and technology extension services and bring farmers together, thereby promoting collective action (Demont 2022; Lin et al 2020; Liu et al 2017; Neupane et al 2022). Membership in cooperatives also affects smallholder farmers’ decisions to adopt improved technologies and invest in their farming operations, helping farmers achieve higher crop yields and production efficiency (Kumar et al 2018; Lin et al 2022; Ma et al 2023; Verhofstadt & Maertens 2014; Zhang et al 2020).…”

“…Small‐scale farmers often live in poor areas with limited infrastructure and face high transaction costs for both agricultural input and output exchange (Barrett, 2008). Farmer organizations, cooperatives, and other forms of collective action are thus expected to be a venue to reduce high transaction costs (Valentinov, 2007), improve the economies of scale (Hoang et al., 2021; Ma et al., 2023), and increase the bargaining power of their members (Su & Cook, 2020). They also play an important role in facilitating agricultural technology adoption and innovations among their members (Ma et al., 2022; Jabbouri et al., 2022; Zhang et al., 2020).…”
