The Impact of a Barrier Island Loss on Extreme Events in the Tampa Bay

Abstract: Barrier islands characterize up to an eighth of the global coastlines. They buffer the mainland coastal areas from storm surge and wave energy from the open ocean. Changes in their shape or disappearance due to erosion may lead to an increased impact of sea level extremes on the mainland. A barrier island threatened by erosion is Egmont Key which is located in the mouth of the Tampa Bay estuary at the west-central coast of Florida. In this sensitivity study we investigate the impact a loss of Egmont Key would … Show more

“…For this reason, we focus on a parametric bias correction, which provides a transfer function that can be applied beyond the range of observations. The method essentially consists of fitting a parametric regression to the observed and simulated WLs of the hindcast and the three SLR scenarios [see, e.g., Ulm et al ., ].…”

“…Moreover, barrier islands protect Cigu's inner coast from strong winds, waves, tides and storm surges caused by typhoons (tropical cyclones). They also act as a buffer against rising sea levels and coastal erosion (Ulm et al, 2016).…”
