Software engineering (SE) and computer science (CS) programs in universities worldwide are marked by a gender gap, which subsequently translates into a gender gap at the industry level. However, there are positive activities that can help attract more women to these male-dominant professions. This study maps the literature related to the achievement of gender balance in SE and CS university-level education and identifies future research directions. More specifically, this article reports on a systematic mapping study of female-inclusive SE and CS tertiary education programs. The authors collected 882 publications between 2015 and 2022 from five databases (ACM, IEEE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Science Direct), selecting 143 peer-reviewed papers for further analysis. The results showed that the main academic contributors were researchers from the USA. The majority of the publications contained observations and explanations regarding the gender gap in computing education. However, an important part of the literature considered proposals and practical activities for achieving gender balance in SE and CS programs. Finally, the authors classified the literature related to female-inclusive SE and CS tertiary education programs, identified the main research focuses and regional distribution, and considered ideas for future research.

Alice ® is one of the most used tools in learning programming languages, given its usefulness to acquire skills in problem solving and algorithmic thinking. This document presents the results of the analysis of the use of the Alice platform as a tool for learning programming from a literature review. We used the most common databases in the area of computer science such as ACM, IEE, among others; and taking into account a search protocol, and some criteria, 24 articles were selected. Among the findings are the effectiveness of the use of Alice as a learning resource for introduction to programming, the amount of work in English, and the weak validity of the experimental results.

Programming teaching plays an important role in developing cognitive thinking skills that are considered to be among 21st century skills, such as problem solving, critical thinking, reflective and analytical thinking. However, it is considered to be a difficult and complex process due to its abstract structure. In this context, it is important to identify the factors that affect the process of the programming teaching and to develop solutions for these factors. Cognitive factors are the leading factors among them. In this context, the aim of the research is to examine the experiences of students and instructors regarding the cognitive problems they face during the process of programming teaching. Content analysis method was used to examine the experiences of students and instructors. The participants of the research consisted of 14 undergraduate students and 4 instructors selected through purposive sampling method Interviews, reflective student diaries, observer reports and semi-structured focus group interviews were used as data collection tools. It is thought that the cognitive problems determined regarding the process of programming teaching will contribute to the studies aimed at developing programming skills.
