The human chorionic gonadotropin molecule from patients with trophoblastic diseases has a high thyrotropic activity but is less active in the ovary

Abstract: To examine the pathogenesis of hyperthyroidism in women with trophoblastic diseases, the biological activity of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) molecules in women with normal pregnancy (n = 85) and in women with trophoblastic diseases (vesicular mole, n = 30; and choriocarcinoma, n = 12) was compared. Hyperthyroidism (thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) < 0.3 mIU/l) was observed more frequently in women with trophoblastic diseases. All the sera were then subjected to Chinese hamster ovary cells transfected wi… Show more

“…Others have suggested that the length of time hCG is elevated plays a role (13). Still others have suggested that differences in hCG glycosylation or sialylation that is seen in patients with GTD and HG results in increased thyrotropic activity (6,(17)(18)(19)(20). In the present study, it is clear that absolute hCG concentrations are higher in women with GTD.…”

“…Prevalence of hyperthyroidism during complete molar pregnancy is as high as 7% [1]. Thyroid hyper function in molar pregnancy is attributed to excess of human chorionic gonadotropin which has a weak intrinsic thyroid stimulating activity and molar thyrotrophic hormone, differing from Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) by being larger in molecular size and longer in duration of action [4] clinical hyperthyroidism because trophoblastic disease is cured by evacuation of molar tissue [5]- [8].…”

“…The values are severalfold higher than normal and can stimulate thyroid function (43). hCG secreted by a mole can also have greater thyrotropic potency than hCG secreted in normal pregnancy.…”
