Thyroid Hormone Levels and Its Relationship with Human Chorionic Gonadotropin in Patients with Hydatidiform Mole

Abstract: Objective: Hydatidiform pregnancy occurs in 1:1000 pregnancies worldwide; incidence is higher in Asian countries. In approximately 5% of cases of hydatidiform mole, clinical hyperthyroidism is present. The aim of this study was to examine the relation between HCG level and thyroid function test. Methods: During 5 years (2009-2013) we included 146 cases of molar pregnancies into the study at Imam Reza teaching hospital. The demographic and clinical data as well as serum initial HCG level and thyroid function te… Show more

“…It is due to hypersecretion of β-hCG. Indeed, hCG stimulates the corpus luteum to the production of estradiol and progesterone via their receptors luteinizing hormone-chorionic gonadotrophin receptor (LH-CGR) and plays a promotive role in the aromatization of steroids of the placenta [12]. Estrogens, like progesterone, are known inducers of nausea and vomiting.…”

“…These secretions could in turn stimulate the mechanoreceptors present throughout the digestive tract, and trigger reflex vomiting by distension and activation of the gastrointestinal tract [13]. Finally, hCG is believed to be responsible for biological hyperthyroidism through thyrotropic action linked to a structural homology between hCG molecules and Thyroid Stimulating Hormon (TSH), as well as for their respective receptors explaining the action of hCG on TSH receptors [12] [14]. The patient can also complain of pelvic pain, present in 20% of cases and related to the presence of luteal cysts or the expulsion of vesicles [4].…”

“…http://ddj.hums.ac.ir http Clinical hyperthyroidism is relatively prevalent and occurs in 1 per 100 pregnancies. This condition can be justified by the similarity of the β-HCG subunit to TSH (4). The relationship between increased β-HCG and TSH level during pregnancy has been known for years (4).…”

“…Histologically, the hydatidiform mole is characterized by a disorder in the chorionic villi, including trophoblastic proliferation and villous stromal edema (2). Hydatidiform mole is the most prevalent form of GTD (3,4) occurring in 1 per 1000 pregnancies in the world (5,6). The prevalence of hydatidiform mole differs in different regions.…”
