The health-related quality of life of ankylosing spondylitis patients assessed by SF-36: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: AS could adversely affect the HRQoL of patients. Measuring HRQoL should be considered as an essential part of the overall assessment of health status of AS patients, which would provide valuable clues for improving the management of disease and making decisions regarding treatment.

“…Health‐related quality of life (HRQoL) is a multi‐domain and subjective concept that encompasses the impact of rheumatic disease and its treatment on a person's perception of his daily life, and it has emerged as important outcome of interest. Some meta‐analyses focusing on rheumatic diseases, such as ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis and Sjögren's syndrome, have integrated some research between disease and HRQoL assessed by the Medical Outcomes Short‐Form‐36 questionnaire (SF‐36). Interestingly, there is no meta‐analysis to assess the impact of systemic sclerosis (SSc) on HRQoL.…”

“…The physical component scale (PCS) is calculated by positively weighting the four subscales in the physical domain (PF, RP, BP, GH); and the remaining psychological domain subscales negatively. In contrast, the mental component scale (MCS) is calculated by positively weighting the four mental domain subscales (MH, VT, SF, RE), and negatively weighting the four physical domain subscales …”

“…Future studies are needed to confirm our results and examine the clinical relevance of these findings. Although absenteeism and presenteeism are common in patients with AS, which has been shown to negatively impact HRQoL [4,27], to the best of our knowledge, this is the first real-world study to compare HRQoL and WPAI in patients with successful vs. failing TNFi treatment. The impact of time to switch to another TNFi on HRQoL, and economic and social burden of AS, was not explored in this study but it is an area of interest for future research.…”

“…The primary outcomes of interest for this review are the following: (1) physical-related outcomes (incidence of ICU-AW, and standardised physical function-related scale combined 6 min walk test37 and the Medical Research Council scale;38 and (2) health and mental status-related outcomes, using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale39 and standardised Health Related Quality Of Life scale combined with the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey Physical Function scale40 with EuroQol 5 Dimensions 4142 Since exact PICS criteria do not exist, we will also evaluate overall outcomes after ICU discharge.…”
