The Hardy–Zuckerman 2-FeSV, a new feline retrovirus with oncogene homology to Abelson-MuLV

Abstract: There is substantial evidence that oncogenes (v-onc) of acute transforming retroviruses have been acquired by transduction of cellular genes (c-onc) with retroviruses. Feline leukaemia virus (FeLV)-associated feline fibrosarcomas have proven to be extremely useful for the isolation of acute transforming retroviruses of a mammalian species. Three different v-onc genes have been identified in five acute transforming feline retroviruses. The Susan McDonough feline sarcoma virus (SMFeSV) contains the oncogene fms … Show more

“…Expression of a shorter, 2.8 kb PDGF-B/c-sis transcript, which lacks the 5' UTS, has been described in cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs;Fen and Daniel, 1991). PDGF-B/c-sis sequences transduced by simian sarcoma and ParodiIrgens feline sarcoma viruses also lack the translation inhibitory 5' UTS (Besmer et al, 1983;Doolittle et al, 1983;Water®eld et al, 1983). The absence of the 5' UTS is thought to contribute to a more e cient translation of the PDGF-B/c-sis gene products in these cells.…”

“…A subset of this region contains sequences highly homologous to tyrosine kinases encoded by other transforming genes (10,22). Since the initial isolation of A-MuLV, one other transduction event involving the c-abl gene has been reported in the characterization of the Hardy-Zuckerman 2 feline sarcoma virus (3). The gene product expressed by this defective feline retro-* Corresponding author.…”

“…7 and 8). c-abl is also the transduced homolog of the transforming genes of Abelson murine leukemia virus (9,10) and Hardy-Zuckerman 2 feline sarcoma virus (11), replication-defective retroviruses that cause aggressive lymphomas in mice and fibrosarcomas in cats, respectively. In each of these cases, the activated forms of c-abl have in common an elevated level of tyrosine kinase activity (5,12).…”
