Positive psychology and tourism: a systematic literature review

This study aims to outline the relationship between Positive Psychology and tourism through a systematic literature review. Tourism seeks to increase the wellbeing of people, and wellbeing is a crucial variable in Positive Psychology which in turn aims to understand and promote people's potential. This research used as search terms 'Positive Psychology', 'wellbeing', 'happiness', 'tourism', 'visitor' and 'travel', terms which were applied through the Online Knowledge Library. The inclusion/exclusion criteria led to a sample of 49 references which were then individually analyzed. Results showed a recent increase in studies focused on the relationship between the variables, Europe being in the lead. Overall, policies are important for tourism development; tourism promotes wellbeing for residents and tourists; entrepreneurs have an innovative opportunity in wellbeing; and nature is linked to wellbeing. Implications and suggestions for future studies are presented. Keywords:Positive psychology, tourism, wellbeing, nature, innovation. ResumoEste estudo objetiva desenvolver uma visão geral sobre a aplicação da Psicologia Positiva no Turismo. O Turismo procura contribuir para aumentar o bem-estar das pessoas e o bem-estar é uma variável fundamental da Psicologia Positiva que procura compreender e promover o potencial dos indivíduos. Utilizou-se como termos de pesquisa as palavras 'Psicologia Positiva', 'bem-estar', 'felicidade', 'turismo', 'visitante' e 'viagem'. A pesquisa foi realizada por meio da Biblioteca do Conhecimento Online. A aplicação de critérios de inclusão/exclusão levou a uma amostra final de 49 referências, analisadas individualmente. Os resultados mostram um interesse recente no estudo da relação em análise, sendo a Europa líder. Globalmente, a política é importante para o desenvolvimento do turismo; o turismo promove o bem-estar dos residentes e turistas; os empresários têm no bem-estar uma oportunidade de inovação; e a natureza relaciona-se com o bem-estar. Implicações e sugestões de estudos futuros são apresentadas.Palavras-chave: Psicologia positiva, turismo, bem-estar, natureza, inovação.

This study used a national sample (N = 36,490) of Chinese urban residents to examine the relationship between outbound travel intention and some key demographic, economic, and geographic variables. Findings indicate that education, income, and paid vacation days significantly predicted outbound travel intention. Compared to residents in Tier-4 cities in China, those in Tier-1, -2, and -3 cities had higher probability of choosing outbound travel by 13.1%, 30.9%, and 15.3%, respectively. This study draws meaningful connections between Chinese outbound tourism and the social and economic realities in China and offers an alternative approach to understanding Chinese outbound tourism.

Subjective well-being in China: how much does commuting matter?

With rapidly increasing urbanization and motorization in China, the effect of commuting on residents' subjective well-being (SWB) is likely growing. We used 13,261 individual, 124 city, and 401 neighbourhood samples from the 2014 China Labour-Force Dynamics Survey (CLDS 2014) and applied multilevel mixed-effects ordered probit regressions to investigate the relationship between commuting and SWB. We found huge differences between urban and rural areas in relation to commuting. Urban respondents' daily average commuting time was 0.56 h while rural respondents' daily average commuting time was 0.41 h. Further, the daily average commute time for residents living in cities with high urbanization rates ([ 70%) was longer than for those living in cities with low urbanization rates (\ 70%). The subjective well-being of residents who commute by walking or cycling was significantly lower than that of those who commute by other transportation modes. The regression results indicated that the longer the commute time, the lower the subjective well-being. Among residents who live in rural areas or cities with low urbanization, subjective well-being was more easily affected by commuting time.
