Los materiales cerámicos basados en el sistema binario ZnO-Bi 2 O 3 tienen su principal aplicación en el campo de los varistores. El sistema binario ZnO-Bi 2 O 3 resulta especialmente relevante para la formación de la microestructura funcional de varistores. La determinación de las diferentes fases en equilibrio a alta temperatura en la región rica en Bi 2 O 3 en el sistema binario ZnO-Bi 2 O 3 permitirá interpretar correctamente el desarrollo microestructural. El estudio de las fases en equilibrio se ha llevado a cabo mediante difracción de rayos X, microscopía electrónica de barrido (MEB) y análisis térmico diferencial (ATD). Tratamientos a diferentes temperaturas, en la zona rica en Bi 2 O 3 del sistema, han permitido determinar la presencia del compuesto 19Bi 2 O 3 ·ZnO como fase estable en equilibrio, en lugar del compuesto 24Bi 2 O 3 ·ZnO. Palabras clave: diagrama de fases, varistores, microestructuraStudy at the Bi 2 O 3 -rich region of the ZnO-Bi 2 O 3 system Ceramic materials based in the ZnO-Bi 2 O 3 system have their principal application as varistors. The binary system ZnO-Bi 2 O 3 is specially relevant to the formation of the microstructure responsable of the varistor behaviour. The study of the different equilibrium phases at high temperatures at the Bi 2 O 3 -rich region of the ZnO-Bi 2 O 3 will allow a correct understanding of the microstructural development. Equilibrium phases have been analyzed by XRD, SEM and DTA. Different temperature treatments of samples formulated in the Bi 2 O 3 rich region of the ZnO-Bi 2 O 3 binary system have allowed to determine the phase 19Bi 2 O 3 ·ZnO as the equilibrium one instead of the 24Bi 2 O 3 ·ZnO phase. Keywords: phases diagrams, varistors, microstructure INTRODUCCIÓNLos materiales cerámicos multicomponentes basados en ZnO dopados con pequeñas cantidades de Bi 2 O 3 muestran un alto grado de no linealidad en su respuesta eléctrica corriente-voltaje. Este comportamiento no óhmico es consecuencia de la microestructura, donde granos de ZnO semiconductores están separados por una fase intergranular rica en Bi 2 O 3 dando lugar a la formación de barreras de potencial.La importancia del diagrama de fases ZnO-Bi 2 O 3 para el procesamiento de materiales varistores es consecuencia de la baja temperatura del eutéctico así como la baja solubilidad del Bi 2 O 3 en ZnO. Dicho diagrama continua siendo objeto de estudio y existen en la literatura fuertes discrepancias en cuanto a fases en equilibrio así como la presencia de fases metaestables, como se refleja en la bibliografía.Levin y Roth [1] en su estudio destacan la presencia de un eutectico a 740ºC, así como la presencia de la fase estable 6Bi 2 O 3 ·ZnO molar, de fusión congruente.Posteriormente Safronov et al [2] mediante estudios de ATD y DRX confirmó la presencia del eutectico a 740ºC para una composición: 86% moles de Bi 2 O 3 -14% moles de ZnO (6.14Bi 2 O 3 ·ZnO) y la transformación de fase de α-Bi 2 O 3 a δ-Bi 2 O 3 a 735ºC, así como la presencia de la fase 24Bi 2 O 3 ·ZnO (Bi 48 ZnO 73 ), que funde incongrue...

The main processes for preparing bulk single crystals and films of photorefractive and piezoelectric Bi 12 M x O 20 ± δ (M = Group II-VIII elements) sillenite compounds are considered. Experimental data are summarized on the crystal growth of Bi 12 M x O 20 ± δ from the melt and under hydrothermal conditions, and the key morphological features of sillenites are analyzed. Various types of macroscopic growth defects in sillenite-type crystals are described, and their origin is discussed. The compositions of second-phase inclusions in undoped and doped (Group I-VIII elements) Bi 12 SiO 20 , Bi 12 GeO 20 , and Bi 12 TiO 20 single crystals are presented, and the main physicochemical properties of various Bi 12 M x O 20 ± δ crystals are summarized.

Crystal Growth of Boron Sillenite Bi24B2039The Sillenite type Biz.tB2039 is an incongruently melting compound at T p = 650 "C. Single crystals have been grown from non-stoichiometric melts as well as from high temperature solutions by the Czochralski method and by a top seeded solution growth technique (TSSG), respectively.The main difficulty in the crystal growth of BizdB2039 arises from the very small field of crystallization in the binary system Bi203-Bz03. Further problems are caused by the nearly simultaneous formation of the 2 : 1 compound BidB209 and the 12: 1 compound Biz~B2039. Therefore, a precise thermal reinvestigation of the phase diagram was carried out using DTA-technique on the BizOsrich side. Additionally, crystal growth runs have been started in the ternary system Bi~03-B203-Li20 in order to extend the crystallization field. Homogeneous melts were more difficult to prepare because of the high density difference between Biz03 (e = 9.3 g/cm3) and B203 (e = 2.46 g/cm"). The homogeneity of the melts were improved, using Biz03 and synthesized Bi4B209 (e = 8.25g/cm3) as starting materials. As a result of this procedure, small crystals of Bi24B~03~ were grown from these starting materials and the lattice parameter were determined.
