The growth of follicles in the rat ovary under the influence of Busulphan and Endoxan

Abstract: Busulphan and Endoxan inhibit the normal course of ovarian follicular growth. Older secondary as well as an antral follicles perish within a very short time. Growing follicles, which at the beginning of the experiment exhibited only one layer, remained intact and single-layered during the entire duration of the experiment. The oocytes, however, continue growing, and the cytoplasmic structures, which are characteristic of older growing follicles, develop in them as well as in the follicle cells. Even a theca fo… Show more

“…They checked the histology of major internal organs of these transplanted mice, and found there were histopathological changes in the liver, pancreas, spleen, lungs, and heart, but not in the kidneys. About the effects of Bu or Cy on ovaries in animals, it was reported that treatment with Bu or Cy alone can cause loss of follicles (Hemsworth and Jackson, 1963;Burkl and Schiechl, 1978;Pelloux et al, 1988;Meirow et al, 1999;Shirota et al, 2003). Until now, there was no systematic study of the effects of the combination of Bu and Cy on major internal organs in mice, especially upon the ovaries, which seem to be the most sensitive to these two drugs.…”

“…CTX has been used extensively for the treatment of different cancers and certain connective tissue and autoimmune diseases, for treatment of minimal lesion glomerulonephritis, and for the control of organ rejection after transplantation [10]. This compound has been shown to produce ovarian failure in humans [11,12] and animals [13,14].…”

“…The oldest theory is "primary or base theory". This theory claims that many mammals have ability to produce a certain number of oocytes which is determined during the embryonic period and each oocyte is surrounded by somatic cells to form follicles (6,7). In recent years, several scientists have claimed that during reproductive age and years after it, there is no increase in the number of oocytes in the ovaries and all the oocytes develop in embryonic period (6).…”
