The Global Burden of Surgical Management of Osteoporotic Fractures

Abstract: Osteoporosis is an epidemic in the developed world. Fracture is a major burden associated with osteoporosis. Surgical management is recommended for particular anatomical areas, whilst other fracture patterns have a less defined and controversial role for surgery. This review aims to highlight increase in the global burden of osteoporosis and subsequent fragility fractures. As health and life expectancy improves, osteoporotic fracture fixation will constitute a significant physical and economic burden. The surg… Show more

In light of recent literature, internal xation with a medial and lateral plate appears to be the gold standard in the treatment of distal femur fractures in the elderly population, which may bene t from early loading and mobilization in terms of lower mortality, inferior morbidity and overall better function [1] [36]. On the other side, if a TKA will be subsequently indicated, the surgeon could decide whether to perform a more familiar medial approach or a lateral one being not afraid of ischemic complications involving the patella and the adjacent soft tissues.…”
