Abstract:The authors provide a perspective on how psychoanalytic process research can be implemented. This is based on a process research model described elsewhere and summarizes the kinds of studies that can be situated on the four levels of the model. Wir danken dem Verlag für die freundliche Abdruckgenehmigung.Übersichten Als vor 10 Jahren in dieser Zeitschrift die Frage nach der Bedeutung der Bindungstheorie für die Psychotherapie in Form zweier Übersichten erörtert wurde (Schmidt u. Strauß 1996; Strauß u. Schmidt 1997), wurde dieses Thema zumindest in der deutschsprachigen wissenschaftlichen Literatur noch nicht sehr intensiv diskutiert. Die beiden Arbeiten wurden vielfach und überraschend positiv rezipiert (z. B. Grawe 1998, S. 400) und fügten sich in eine wahre Flut von Veröffentlichungen zum Potenzial der Bindungstheorie im klinischen Feld ein, die beispielsweise in dem 1999 erschienenen Handbook of Attachment (Cassidy u. The research reported in this article aims to demonstrate a method for the systematic study of the therapist/patient interaction in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, drawing upon the tradition and methods of 'pragmatics'--the study of language in interaction. A brief introduction to the discipline of pragmatics demonstrates its relevance to the contemporary focus of clinical theory on the here-and-now dynamics of the relationship between analyst and patient. This is followed by a detailed study of five segments from the transcript of a therapeutic dialogue, drawn from a brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy, in which therapist and patient negotiate the meaning of the patient's symptom: Is it psychosomatic? The research seeks to show how the therapeutic process can be observed and studied as an interactional achievement, grounded in general and well-studied procedures through which meaning is intersubjectively developed and shared. Implications of the analysis for clinical theory and practice, and further research, are discussed.

In this paper I question whether the randomized controlled trial (RCT) and the evidence‐based medicine model are well suited for psychotherapy research. First I discuss general characteristics of the randomized controlled trial and argue that, given a number of incompatibilities with the discipline of psychotherapy, these trials tend to provide us with data that have limited validity. The methodological objections I raise are important as the treatment protocols produced within the context of randomized controlled trials tend to be forced upon clinical practice in uncritical ways. On the other hand, I argue that systematic research is relevant for psychotherapy. If research is designed to address concerns arising from clinical practice – in particular, the far‐reaching complexity of the therapeutic encounter – it can be a powerful tool for further developing our discipline.
