The geographic concentrations of air traffic and economic development: A spatiotemporal analysis of their association and decoupling in Brazil

Abstract: This paper examines the evolution of the geographic concentration of the Brazilian air transport network with a focus on its determinants and possible detachments from the spatial patterns of socioeconomic activity. We develop an econometric framework employing and contrasting the results of Gini, Herfindahl-Hirschman and Theil indexes, with and without normalisation to account for economic and demographic spatial dynamics. Our results suggest that the spatial dynamics of the air network and that of the countr… Show more

“…Além disso, a desregulamentação continuou em termos de participação acionária de companhias aéreas estrangeiras (Figura 4). Embora esse ambiente tenha melhorado a oferta e a competição nas rotas principais, especialmente aquelas conectando as capitais dos estados e grandes centros urbanos, o acesso regional ainda é caro e, na maioria dos casos, insatisfatório (Oliveira et al, 2020).…”

“…Moreover, deregulation has continued in terms of foreign airline ownership. While this environment has improved the supply and competition on the trunk routes, particularly those linking state capital cities and major urban centres, regional access is still expensive and, in most cases, poorly serviced (Oliveira et al , 2020).…”

“…The results show that the effect of energy structure plays an important role in decoupling, and it is necessary to formulate the energy policies that are conducive to the use of more renewable energy to promote the decoupling of North African countries ( 17 ). Some research extended the application of a decoupling theory to environmental (such as carbon) and social (such as death) issues, and found that it is more difficult to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector than it is to reduce traffic-related deaths, and others studied 15 EU member states from 1995 to 2014 and found that the decoupling effect was not controlled by internal drivers of carbon dioxide emissions ( 18 , 19 ). The decoupling and influencing factors between economic growth and carbon dioxide emissions in Cameroon were assessed from 1990 to 2015 ( 20 ).…”
