The genus Navicula in ancient basins. I. Two novelties from the Black Sea

Abstract: Backgrounds and aims -In this paper results on Navicula s. str. species from the (sub)littoral zone of the Black Sea are presented. Navicula pinnata var. pontica Mereschk. was originally described from the Black Sea in the early 20th century but, due to mistakes, incorrectly referred to in the literature as Navicula pennata A.W.F.Schmidt var. pontica Mereschk. A second species, Navicula parapontica sp. nov. is described as new for science. Analysis of recent and historical diatom assemblages revealed that Mere… Show more

“…M. urvae and M. pusilla size descriptions are similar given by the authors (Witkowski et al, 2000;Lo ir & Novarino, 2013) but single large median partecta exists in M. urvae wh ile M. pusilla has two median partecta (Loir & Novarino, 2013). Navicula parapontica was recently described fro m Black Sea (Witkowski et al, 2010). The taxon is similar with N. pontica by its valve outline.…”

“…N. parapontica is smaller in size (22-38 µm and N. pontica, 34-70 µm) and have higher striae density (12-14 in 10 µm) than N. pontica (7-10 in 10 µm). According to Witkowski et al (2010), N. pontica was found only in Black Sea and N. parapontica was the dominant species in the same habitat. Navicula pavillardii and N. subagnita are similar species and should be checked while description of the taxa (Álvarez-Blanco & S. Blanco, 2014).…”

“…Among these, 68 novel Black Sea diatom flora taxa were revealed (Table 2). Moreover, eight species and taxonomic combinations which are described as new to science were also identified: Nevrova & Lange-Bertalot (Nevrova et al, 2013;Witkowski et al, 2010). Additionally, four diatom species that were not registered in the Black Sea were also recorded: Navicula glabriuscula var.…”

“…The data from the Southern part of the Black Sea (coasts of Turkey) is still missing. The total list of species has been prepared according to the system outlined in Round et al (1990) with the latest updates Kociolek, 1999, 2011;Levkov, 2009;Reid, 2012;Witkowski et al, 2000Witkowski et al, , 2010Witkowski et al, , 2014.…”
