The genetic potential of mother trees as a basis for Acer pseudoplatanus ‘Atropurpureum’ plant production

Abstract: Sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus L.) is one of the most valuable species of Serbia’s noble hardwoods. Based on the results of previous research, it can be concluded that this is a species with a pronounced ecological plasticity and high genetic potential. From the aspect of ornamentalness, one of the most frequent cultivars in urban green spaces and tree rows is the cv ‘Atropurpureum’, also known as ‘Spaethii’ or ‘Purpureum’. It is distinguished by dark green leaf adaxials and purple undersides, which… Show more

“…Because leaf shape and leaf size are two independent characteristics of genetic modules (Baker et al 2015), leaf shape selection might not influence the effect of leaf size (or may only do so to a lesser degree) if the breeding environment could eliminate or decrease the genetic load caused by the adaptive conflict. Certain breeding traits are associated with unisexual inheritance or sex bias, for example, leaf color (Š ijačić-Nikolić et al 2009(Š ijačić-Nikolić et al , 2011, rendering trait selection applicable by tracking cpDNA barcodes.…”

“…The criterion for the selection of units from a great number of individuals depends not only on the future function, but also on the aesthetical-physiological characteristics. By selection and breeding, many ornamental cultivars with emphasized individual aesthetical features have been selected and described (Josifović, 1973;Ocokoljić, 2006;Ocokoljić et al, 2009;Šijačić-Nikolić et al, 2011).…”
