The Gap In Meeting The Educational And Support Needs Of Women With Takotsubo Syndrome Compared To Women With An Acute Coronary Syndrome

Abstract: Background: Takotsubo Syndrome is a condition that causes impairment in cardiac function in the absence of significant causative coronary artery disease. Takotsubo Syndrome is most commonly reported in older women, has identical presenting symptoms to acute coronary syndrome (ACS),but differs in cause, management and outcomes. Ongoing symptoms and recurrence of Takotsubo Syndrome are not uncommon but little support is available for these women.   Aims: This study compares (1) educational support an… Show more

“…Patients with TS were not invited to education and cardiac rehabilitation that they potentially could benefit from because they lacked CAD. 32 Granitto et al 33 concluded that it is important with support from healthcare professionals to explain the connection between TS and stress and to identify anxiety and stress to be able to explore different ways of adopting coping strategies. Support and follow-up are of great importance as it is not only TS patients' own behaviour that has to be changed, but the need to meet the demands from others.…”

“…Compared to women with ACS, patients with TTS are less likely to receive information about medication management (including purpose, administration, potential side effects and expected length of continuance of therapy); activity during recovery; managing stress and anxiety; when to seek medical assistance in the case of ongoing symptoms; and the potential for TTS recurrence [54], and to support the necessity for long-term anti-failure therapy in some patients.…”

“…These concerns were amplified by a lack of information regarding residual TTSrelated symptoms and a lack of knowledge on the part of healthcare professionals who 'could not tell them what was normal or common for their condition'. 8 The lack of knowledge was also illustrated in the study of Schubert et al, 9 in which 23 women recovering from TTS were compared with 23 age-matched women with acute coronary syndrome. The study concluded that women with TTS were 'less likely to receive educational support about their condition, particularly stress .…”

“…management' and less likely to be offered cardiac rehabilitation, despite perceiving that this would have been 'helpful in aiding their recovery'. 9 We put forward four factors that may contribute to people with TTS reporting suboptimal support following discharge.…”
