THE GAP BETWEEN WHITES AND WHITENESS: Interracial Intimacy and Racial Literacy

Abstract: How do White members of Black-White interracial families negotiate the meanings of race, and particularly Whiteness? Inspired by W. E. B. Du Bois's concept of double consciousness, this article argues that interracial intimacy is a microlevel political site where White people can acquire a critical analytical lens that we conceptualize as racial literacy. This article fills a gap in the empirical and theoretical literature on race and Whiteness by including gay, lesbian, and heterosexual families on both sides… Show more

“…Now clearly, those who name postracial humor as racist also display a racial literacy, and openly draw upon racial history as a tool to recognize and indict this humor. Their racial literacy consists of the analytical aptitude to assess social and institutional realities in the context of history and intersecting injustices (Guinier 2004;Twine and Steinbugler 2006). However, in the originators and willing consumers of postracialist humor, this literacy is further complicated by the fact that in almost every instance there is not only a firm denial of racist intent, but also a claim to innocence=ignorance of the racial knowledge that would be required to construct this racial rhetoric.…”
