Even though eXtended Reality (XR) technology has been trialed in various projects in primary and secondary education, its lack of universal design hinders further adoption. In this paper, we present the results from focus group interviews with representatives from Norway’s private and public sectors, in which we investigated their practical experiences and opinions about the accessibility and usability of XR technology in schools. We summarize practical opportunities and challenges related to the need for universal design of XR technology, both in general terms and in education specifically. Moreover, we compare the results to a previously conducted selective and weighted literature review. Five major future research needs to improve the universal design of XR technology emerge: The need to (1) increase co-creation, (2) identify and understand barriers, (3) develop solutions for said barriers, (4) advance standardization, and (5) develop evaluation methods and tools.

The use of extended reality (XR) technologies, namely Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR) in education, has attracted much attention in recent years. Many educators have described how XR benefits learners and how useful AR and VR technologies are in the classroom. However, creating AR and VR educational tools, apps or learning environments is a complex process, hence providing an immersive learning experience using these technologies is not a straightforward journey. As a result, the adoption of these emerging technologies in education might be delayed or halted despite their reported benefits to today’s learners. In this paper, websites, technical articles, academic journals, reports and mobile app stores, relating to the use of XR technologies in education, have been examined. A number of themes have emerged and been reported in this paper, which provides a roadmap for those who would like to create XR experiences for learning and training purposes. The paper also describes the factors that should be considered when selecting an option to follow to introduce such immersive learning experiences.

The use of Extended Reality in Primary Education classrooms has emerged as a transformative element that enhances the teaching and learning process of students. In this context, examining the various effects that this tool can generate is essential to identify both the opportunities and limitations that teachers face when incorporating this technology into their practices. The aim of this research is to analyse the impact of the use of Extended Reality as an educational resource in Primary Education, focusing on teachers’ perceptions. The information was collected through semi-structured interviews with 36 active teachers in Primary Education. The analysis of the data obtained identifies the benefits and functionalities offered by the implementation of Extended Reality in Primary Education classrooms, as well as the uncertainties and concerns that teachers have with the implementation of Extended Reality. The results highlight the significant opportunities that Extended Reality offers in the teaching–learning process, provided that teachers are adequately trained. Furthermore, this study offers valuable recommendations to guide future teachers and researchers in the successful integration of this technology into the educational process.
