The fruit of the date palm: its possible use as the best food for the future?

Abstract: The fruits (dates) of the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) contain a high percentage of carbohydrate (total sugars, 44-88%), fat (0.2-0.5%), 15 salts and minerals, protein (2.3-5.6%), vitamins and a high percentage of dietary fibre (6.4-11.5%). The flesh of dates contains 0.2-0.5% oil, whereas the seed contains 7.7-9.7% oil. The weight of the seed is 5.6-14.2% of the date. The fatty acids occur in both flesh and seed as a range of saturated and unsaturated acids, the seeds containing 14 types of fatty acids,… Show more

“…The data from the literature have demonstrated the importance of dietary fibers (6.4-11.5%) in dates especially insoluble fibers (84-94% of total fibers). 39 These fibers are capable of accelerating GIT activity and reducing the risk of constipation. Dates fibers have also a preventive effect against some diseases, particularly the digestive system cancers.…”

“…Dates was cultivated throughout the year in the countries with hot and dry climate with little rain and high soil salinity and alkaline content such as in Asia, Middle East and Africa (Chao & Krueger, 2007). The dates can be considered as an almost ideal food because of the nutrient contents and the beneficial effect to health (Al-Shahib & Marshall, 2003). There are thousands of date varieties that usually classified based on the texture of the dates from soft to dry (Arias-Jimenez, 2002).…”
