The freshwater calanoida (crustacea : copepoda) of Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia

Abstract: The systematics and geographical distribution of Malaysian and Singapore freshwater calanoid copepods are discussed in details . Neodiaptomus handeli Brehm, N. laii Kiefer, N. blachei (Brehm), N. botulifer Kiefer, N. mephistopheles Brehm, Pseudodiaptomus (Schmackeria) dauglishi Sewell, P. (S .) tollingerae Sewell and Tropodiaptomus spp . Kiefer are all present in the northwestern part of the Peninsula . There are only 4 species, namely, N. handeli, N. botulifer, N. meggitti Kiefer and Tropodiaptomus s p . in … Show more

“…The taxonomy and distribution of Southeast Asian Calanoida has been dealt with largely by several workers (Brehm, 1923;1933a;1933b;1933c;1951;Kiefer, 932a;Wright, 1928;Lai & Fernando, I978a;1978b;1979c;Bricker et al, 1978). Southeast Asia according to its copepod composition (Meisenheimer, after Brehm, 1953b) There are about half a dozen neodiaptomids in Southeast Asia.…”

“…Neodiaptomus is represented by four valid species namely N. schmackeri (Poppe and Richard, 1892), N. physalipus (Kiefer, 1935), N. lindbergi (Brehm 1951), N. intermedius (Flobner, 1984) in Indian subcontinent. Neodiaptomus meggiti is recorded in Mayanmar and Malaysia, Fernando 1978 and while never been reported in Indian subcontinent except of single report from Andaman (Reddy, 2000), whereas N. schmackeri is reported in Thailand (Sanoamuang & Athibai, 2002), mainland India (Reddy and Reddy, 1992) and adjoining countries to Andaman but not reported from Andaman.…”

“…Samples were preserved in 5 % formalin, and counted in a Sedgewick-Rafter chamber. The microcrustaceans and rotifers were identified by available standard taxonomic references (Fernando & Zankai, 1981;Karunakaran & Johnson, 1978;Lai & Fernando, 1978;1980;Lim and Fernando, 1985;Ong& Lai, 1980;Pennak, 1978;Idris, 1983).…”

“…Studies on rice-field zooplankton in Malaysia deal with taxonomy, distribution, and effects of pesticides (Lai & Fernando, 1978;1980;Fernando et al, 1979;Karunakaran & Johnson, 1978;Ong & Lai, 1980;Fernando & Zankai, 1981;Idris, 1983;Lim & Fernando, 1985;Lim et al, 1984). However, the importance of microcrustaceans and rotifers as fish food (Heckman, 1979;Lemly & Dimmick, 1982a;1982b;Ali & Bayne, 1985;Yamasaki et al, 1988) requires research on seasonal dynamics, abundance, and species composition.…”
