The Frequency of Malnutrition in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract: Objective: Obesity is one of the most common comorbidities of diabetes mellitus (DM) whose frequency is rapidly increasing nowadays. Although obesity caused by excessive and unbalanced nutrition often accompanies diabetes; malnutrition is another complication of diabetes. This study was conducted to investigate the frequency of malnutrition in individuals with diabetes. Method: This study is a cross-sectional study. “…Diabetes is often associated with malnutrition, especially in older patients, and the association has been previously reported [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ]. Malnutrition in patients with diabetes and high-risk foot is known to be associated with inflammation-related atherosclerosis, leading to amputation of the lower extremities in addition to known risk factors [ 19 ].…”

“…The presence of hypertension and hyperlipidemia in diabetic patients increase the microvascular and macrovascular risks exponentially [20]. In addition, the frequency of hypertension and hyperlipidemia has been shown to be higher in diabetic patients with high malnutrition risk [7]. Some patients recruited in this study had hypertension (63.3%), dyslipidemia (51.0%), and cardiovascular disease (49.0%) at baseline, which are major contributors to morbidity and mortality of diabetic patients [21,22].…”

“…A plausible explanation is that hyperglycemia impair immunological function in T2DM patients ( 10 ). Furthermore, a significant malnutrition prevalence was found in hospitalized older patients with T2DM ( 11 ), due to gastroparesis, diet changes, and chronic kidney disease ( 12 ). Malnutrition is an issue commonly related to secondary immune deficiency and infection risk ( 13 ).…”
