Ectopic fat obesity presented the greatest risk of incident type 2 diabetes.

We review recent progress in geological and geophysical investigation in SW Japan, Nankai Trough, and Philippine Sea Plate (PSP), and propose a hypothesis for the Miocene tectonics in SW Japan driven by middle Miocene swift migration of the TTT (trench-trench-trench) triple junction. The new hypothesis is based on the new interpretations as follows. Near-trench magmatism in the outer zone of SW Japan is ascribed to a collision of proto-Izu arc in addition to the previous model of an oceanic ridge of the Shikoku Basin and hot PSP subduction. The indentation structures at Capes Ashizuri, Muroto in Shikoku, and Shiono on the Kii Peninsula were previously explained by "kink folding" due to recent E-W compression. We alternatively suppose the collision of the active arc or topographic peaks such as seamounts inferred from geological and experimental observations. The main crustal component in SW Japan is suggested to be of igneous plutonic rocks rather than the previous interpretation of Cretaceous to Tertiary accretionary complexes. This is typically illustrated in the outer zone to the north of Capes Ashizuri, Muroto, and Shiono from geophysical observation of gravity anomalies, velocity and resistivity, together with geological estimations of caldera age and the size of its root pluton. Episodic crustal growth due to intrusion of igneous rock and subduction of the PSP may have stopped after approximately 12 Ma and restarted at approximately 6 Ma. Our emphasis for this gap is a cessation and resurgence of subduction rather than the previous interpretation, i.e., decreasing of subduction rate.

Slow slip events (SSEs) accommodate a significant proportion of tectonic plate motion at subduction zones, yet little is known about the faults that actually host them. The shallow depth (<2 km) of well-documented SSEs at the Hikurangi subduction zone offshore New Zealand offers a unique opportunity to link geophysical imaging of the subduction zone with direct access to incoming material that represents the megathrust fault rocks hosting slow slip. Two recent International Ocean Discovery Program Expeditions sampled this incoming material before it is entrained immediately down-dip along the shallow plate interface. Drilling results, tied to regional seismic reflection images, reveal heterogeneous lithologies with highly variable physical properties entering the SSE source region. These observations suggest that SSEs and associated slow earthquake phenomena are promoted by lithological, mechanical, and frictional heterogeneity within the fault zone, enhanced by geometric complexity associated with subduction of rough crust.

Background and objectives Metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) is a unique obesity phenotype that apparently protects people from the metabolic complications of obesity. The association between MHO phenotype and incident CKD is unclear. Thus, this study investigated the association between MHO phenotype and incident CKD.Design, setting, participants, & measurements A total of 3136 Japanese participants were enrolled in an 8-year follow-up cohort study in 2001. Metabolically healthy status was assessed by common clinical markers: BP, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, and fasting plasma glucose concentrations. Body mass index $25.0 kg/m 2 was defined as obesity. CKD was defined by proteinuria or eGFR of ,60 ml/min per 1.73 m 2 . To calculate the odds ratio for incident CKD, logistic regression analyses were performed.Results The crude incidence proportions of CKD were 2.6% (56 of 2122 participants) in participants with the metabolically healthy nonobesity phenotype, 2.6% (8 of 302) in those with the MHO phenotype, 6.7% (30 of 445) in those with the metabolically abnormal nonobesity phenotype, and 10.9% (29 of 267) in those with the metabolically abnormal obesity phenotype. Compared with metabolically healthy nonobesity phenotype, the odds ratios for incident CKD were 0.83 (95% confidence interval [95% CI], 0.36 to 1.72; P=0.64) for MHO, 1.44 (95% CI, 0.80 to 2.57; P=0.22) for metabolically abnormal nonobesity, and 2.80 (95% CI, 1.45 to 5.35; P=0.02) for metabolically abnormal obesity phenotype after adjustment for confounders, including age, sex, smoking statues, alcohol use, creatinine, uric acid, systolic BP, HDL cholesterol, and impaired fasting glucose or diabetes.Conclusion MHO phenotype was not associated with higher risk of incident CKD.

The Mugi Mélange located in western Shikoku of the Shimanto Belt shows systematic Y‐P deformation fabrics formed by microshear and pressure solution that penetrate throughout the mélange pile. Magnetic susceptibility ellipsoids obtained from the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) are highly oblate. Maximum and minimum axes of the ellipsoids are consistent with the shear orientation of the mélange and the mean pole of P surfaces, respectively. This agreement suggests that the Mugi Mélange was formed as a result of underthrusting of trench filling sediment. Vitrinite reflectance ranges from 2.52% to 3.08%, which corresponds to a maximum paleotemperature of ∼180–200°C. Pseudotachylyte, evidence of a seismogenic slip, was found in the upper boundary roof fault of the Mugi Mélange. However, there is not a thermal gap between the mélange and the overlying coherent piles, and the temperature from vitrinite reflectance gradually rises downward from the coherent piles to the mélange beyond the boundary fault, which suggests that paleoisotherms parallel the boundary fault orientation. The isotherms in the seismogenic zone are estimated as subparallel to the plate boundary décollement. Therefore the setting of the cataclastic boundary fault, which includes pseudotachylyte, appears to be a major plate boundary thrust or a subhorizontal splay fault. A probable geologic setting that accounts for the Mugi Mélange and the seismogenic roof fault is partitioning of the slip along the plate boundary fault in space and time: interseismic slip in the mélange and seismic slip along the roof fault.

To investigate the acute effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the lifestyle and metabolic parameters in patients with type 2 diabetes mellites. This cross-sectional and retrospective cohort study induced 203 patients who completed a questionnaire regarding stress levels and lifestyles. Data regarding stress levels, sleep time, exercise, and total diet, snack, and prepared food intake were obtained from the questionnaires. The changes in the body weight or HbA1c levels were determined by comparing the values at the time the questionnaire was administered to those noted 3 months ago. Increased levels of stress and decreased exercise levels were reported in approximately 40% and >50%. During the COVID-19 pandemic. There was a negative correlation between stress and exercise (r = -0.285, p < 0.001) and a positive correlation between stress and prepared food intake (r = 0.193, p = 0.009). Decreased exercise levels (r = -0.33, p < 0.001) and increased snack consumption (r = 0.24, p = 0.002) were associated with increased body weight. Furthermore, increased total diet intake (r = 0.16, p = 0.031) was associated with increased HbA1c levels. These relationships remained significant for patients aged <65 years and patients who did not engage in regular exercise. Many patients experienced stress and lifestyle changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and these changes were associated with increased body weight and HbA1c levels.
