The formation of delta‐Aminolevulinate a precursor of chlorophyll, in barley and the role of iron

Abstract: Chlorophyll formation in higher plants is light dependent. Light directly affects the formation of 6-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and the conversion of protochlorophyll to chlorophyll.

“…(Garg and Hemantaranjan, 1988). The greening effect of foliar applications of Fe on Kentucky bluegrass has been documented (Yust et al, 1984) and has been attributed to the requirement of Fe as a precursor in chlorophyll biosynthesis (Miller et al, 1982).…”

“…The stimulation in the enzyme activity is almost double in relation to their respective controls, but the accumulation in P content is more pronounced at excess P with excess Co might be due to higher supply of both. As has been reported by Miller et al [29] most probably in Fe deficiency the condensation of glycine and succinyl CoA decreased to form delta amino laevulinic acid (ALA), a precursor of porphyrin. This in turn might disturb the carbohydrate metabolism which gets support from low Hill reaction activity in excess Co, more significant being in adequate P. The decrease in growth and biomass and low concentration of chlorophyll a and b of tomato ( Fig.…”
