The Formal Oxidation States of Iridium Now Run from −III to +IX

Abstract: Rarer than a new element: Recently Wang et al. produced the [(Ir+IX)O4]+ ion by a pulsed laser vaporization/thermal expansion method and studied it by IR photodissociation spectroscopy. The oxidation state of +IX had been unknown previously. The picture shows the mass spectra for the argon‐tagged iridium oxide species.

“…[2][3][4][5] Recently,t he IrO 4 + cation was successfully formed in the gas phase,a nd was identified to contain the highest reported Ir IX oxidation state. “…As discussed by us before,1 new, well‐established oxidation states in Chemistry are rarer than new elements. It therefore was interesting that the positive oxidation state of +IX was reached by Wang et al 2.…”

“…[5] was the first to produce Ir IX by chemical, as opposed to nuclear, means.) Pyykkç and Xu [8] reviewed the formal oxidation states of iridium and noted, "…for many new exotic species, prediction precedes production." Herein, we pose the question: does oxidation state 10 exist?…”
