The Footfall of Shopping Centres in Olomouc (Czech Republic): an Application of the Gravity Model

Abstract: The issue of the footfall of large retail facilities in the city of Olomouc is treated in this article from the perspective of spatial interaction modelling. A production-constrained gravity model is applied to reveal spatial patterns of shopping travel intensities in the city. Three problems are addressed: the existing pattern and intensities of flows to the shopping centres; the prediction of possible future changes in these patterns and intensities; and inferences about hypothetical sizes of shopping centre… Show more

“…Some studies highlighted the perspective of consumers for measuring the attractiveness of the Czech and Slovak shopping centres (Križan et al , 2014; Kunc et al , 2016). However, the researchers in the Czech and Slovak Republic focused mainly on the spatial aspects of shopping behaviour (Klapka et al , 2013; Kunc et al , 2012a; Križan et al , 2014, 2018; Maryáš et al , 2014), using spatial interaction modelling, gravity models and with regard to commuting for retail shopping. Similarly, the Polish and Hungarian scientific literature used the shopping centres' phenomenon as the subject of geographical research (Nagy, 2001; Żerebecka, 2005; Rochmińska, 2016).…”

“…New settlements of middle-class residents are now located on the urban boundaries of cities. The urban fringe is characterized by industrial zones, shopping malls, and logistic centers usually established on greenfield sites (Klapka et al 2013;Kunc et al 2016). This development has resulted in a massive urban sprawl and a continuous increase in individual car traffic (Halás et al 2014).…”

“…From the economic point of view, the decline of allotment gardening has been strongly influenced by an increase in global market supply (Klapka et al 2013;Kunc et al 2016). Cheap imported horticultural products offered in large supermarket chains caused a considerable decrease in product sales by horticultural societies and allotment associations, which could not compete in price (Teislerová 2006).…”
