SUMMARY: The diets and the trophic niche overlap between seven flatfish species were studied in a coastal nursery adjoining to the Tagus estuary (Portugal). Fish were sampled monthly, from March to November 1999, using a beach seine. Arnoglossus imperialis (Rafinesque, 1810), Arnoglossus laterna (Walbaum, 1792) and Arnoglossus thori Kyle, 1913, fed mainly on crustaceans. The diets of Buglossidium luteum (Risso, 1810) and Dicologoglossa cuneata (Moreau, 1881) were mainly composed of Bivalvia and Polychaeta, while for Scophthalmus rhombus (Linnaeus, 1758) the main food items were Mysidacea and Teleostei. The diet of Pegusa lascaris (Risso, 1810) was mainly composed by Cumacea, Bivalvia, Decapoda and Amphipoda. Based on diet similarities two main groups were identified: one composed of A. imperialis, A. laterna, A. thori and S. rhombus, and the other grouping B. luteum, P. lascaris and D. cuneata. For the most common flatfishes, a similar pattern of diet seasonal variation was found, such that Amphipoda presented higher indices values in the period from March to June, while from July to November, Decapoda were more abundant. Although high values of diet overlap were obtained among some of the species, the main items in the diet of flatfishes are probably the most abundant prey in this coastal area, which suggests a generalist and opportunistic utilization of these food resources. Furthermore, niche overlap between these species is probably minimized by differences in resource use in other niche dimensions, namely time and space.Key words: niche overlap, feeding ecology, flatfish, nursery, coastal areas. RESUMEN: SOLAPAMIENTO DEL NICHO TRÓFICO EN UN ÁREA DE CRÍA EN LA COSTA PORTUGUESA. -Se estudiaron las dietas y el solapamiento de nicho trófico de siete especies de peces planos en un área costera adyacente al estuario del río Tajo (Portugal). Los peces se muestrearon mensualmente, de marzo a noviembre de 1999 usando un arte de cerco de playa. Arnoglossus imperialis (Rafinesque, 1810), Arnoglossus laterna (Walbaum, 1792) y Arnoglossus thori Kyle, 1913, se alimentan principalmente de crustáceos. La dieta de Buglossidium luteum (Risso, 1810) y Dicologoglossa cuneata (Moreau, 1881) estuvo compuesta, principalmente, por bivalvos y poliquetos, mientras que para Scophthalmus rhombus (Linnaeus, 1758) el principal alimento fueron misidáceos y teleósteos. La dieta de Pegusa lascaris (Risso, 1810) estuvo compuesta, principalmente, por cumáceos, bivalvos, decápodos y amfípodos. Shrimp and crabs were sampled by beam trawl over tidal and diel cycles on a sandy beach on the west coast of Scotland in June and August. There were significant positive relationships between depth (0 to 5 m) and numbers of individuals and numbers of species caught. More species and individuals were caught at night than by day, but there was no evidence for the existence of distinct 'day' and 'night' communities. Differences in species composition and numbers caught reflected differences in the mgratory and burying behaviour of individual species. The macrocrustaceans found on this beach are omnivorous predators feeding on a wide range of prey species. Predation by them is one cause of mortality for the populations of juvenile fishes on the beach. Two species, the shrimp Crangon crangon and the shore crab Carcinus maenas, account for most of such predation by macrocrustaceans, which affects both round and flatfish juveniles in varying proportions at different times. In particular, the intensity of predation was generally greatest at night for both species.

The surface deposit feeding species Pygospio elegans and Macoma balthica are dominant members of many sandy bottom communities of northern boreal regions. The feeding mode of both species and the tube-building of P. elegans are assumed to affect community structure by interactions with other species. The weight of tubes of P. elegans varied between 2 and 13 g DW/ 100 cm 2 at the two stations investigated and during the year, which is equivalent to 230-1500 cm of tubes per 100 cm 2 of sediment surface. Sediment stability may be affected directly or indirectly by the amount of tubes present. M. balttn'ca shows a hnear relation between the maximum size of particles which can be inhaled and animal length. In Kiel Bay, particles > 0.5 mm are out of the range of this species. In summer, the potential feeding area (PFA,) of a P. elegans population at one station in Kiel Bay was 1.8 times the available surface area. The PFA of three different populations of M. balthica in Kiel Bay exceeded the available surface area by factors of 2.6, 2.7, and 3.2. These findings indicate strong intra-and interspecific competition for food. Additionally, the feeding of both species may strongly affect the recruitment of benthic species via pelagic larvae. Experiments are proposed to evaluate the significance of the investigated behavioural aspects for community structure.
