Distribution, movements and diet of macrocrustaceans on a Scottish sandy beach with particular reference to predation on juvenile fishes

Abstract: Shrimp and crabs were sampled by beam trawl over tidal and diel cycles on a sandy beach on the west coast of Scotland in June and August. There were significant positive relationships between depth (0 to 5 m) and numbers of individuals and numbers of species caught. More species and individuals were caught at night than by day, but there was no evidence for the existence of distinct 'day' and 'night' communities. Differences in species composition and numbers caught reflected differences in the mgratory and bu… Show more

“…Its actual diet, however, is mainly determined by the spatial and temporal availability of its prey (Ansell et al 1999). In the Wadden Sea, predation of the common shrimp on bivalve spat is size selective (Beukema et al 1998; Van der Veer et al 1998;Hiddink et al 2002).…”

“…Diet information for almost all the compartments here identified had to be obtained from the literature (e.g. Hughes, 1969;Costa, 1982;Pihl, 1985;Zajac, 1986;Sprung, 1994;Ansell et al, 1999;Azeiteiro et al, 1999;Cunha et al, 2000;Pardal et al, 2000, see Appendix A). Initially, all prey items of each compartment of macrofauna and fishes were listed, along with their corresponding percentages of occurrence.…”

“…The animals show a broad feeding spectrum acting as predators unselectively feeding omnivorously or carnivorously (del Norte-Campos and Temming 1994; Gibson et al 1995). The stomach contents of C. crangon reflect the relative abundance of potential prey organisms in the respective habitat of the Crangon specimens (Plagmann 1939;Pihl and Rosenberg 1984;Ansell et al 1999;Oh et al 2001). All individuals studied here came from the sublittoral zone of the southern North Sea.…”
