The FengYun-3C radio occultation sounder GNOS: a review of the mission and its early results and science applications

Abstract: Abstract. The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Occultation Sounder (GNOS) is one of the new-generation payloads on board the Chinese FengYun 3 (FY-3) series of operational meteorological satellites for sounding the Earth's neutral atmosphere and ionosphere. FY-3C GNOS, on board the FY-3 series C satellite launched in September 2013, was designed to acquire setting and rising radio occultation (RO) data by using GNSS signals from both the Chinese BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) and the US Glob… Show more

“…These missions could benefit from the use of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers with improved data processing and the ability to simultaneously track signals from different GNSS constellations. An example is FengYun-3C, whose GNSS occultation sounder (GNOS) can track four BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) and six Global Positioning System (GPS) occultation events simultaneously [22][23][24].…”

“…For the time being, the further RO processing of FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC data, as well as of the RO data from the more recent FengYun-3 operational satellite series [104] and the commercial CubeSat constellation of Spire [105], is prepared with using the LEO orbits from these data providers together with fixed adopted values of position and velocity uncertainty estimates based on their orbit quality assessments. As part of the future multi-satellites portfolio, we will also process the very recent FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 RO data [106].…”

“…Under this structure, the antenna patterns of horizontal polarization and vertical polarization have good consistency. The dual-polarized receiver is also supplied by NSSC-CAS, which is similar to the receiver of its GNSS occultation sounder (GNOS) onboard the FengYun 3 series C satellite [27]. The carrier phase and signal amplitude of horizontally and vertically polarized GPS signals can be obtained separately based on this kind of receiver.…”
