The feeding of dried distillers' grains with solubles to lactating sows

Abstract: Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the feeding of dried distillers' grains with solubles (DDGS) in sow lactation diets. In Exp. 1, 168 multiparous sows (PIC, Camborough 22) were fed a 10% DDGS diet throughout gestation. Sows were randomly allotted to 1 of 4 corn-soybean meal lactation diets formulated to contain different levels of DDGS (0, 10, 20, and 30%, respectively). All diets were formulated to be isocaloric (3.46 Mcal ME/kg) and all other nutrients exceeded NRC (1998) nutrient recommendations.… Show more

“…In con-trast to the current study, Wilson et al (2003) fed sows diets containing similar concentrations of DDGS in gestation (50% DDGS) and lactation (20% DDGS) for 2 reproductive cycles and reported similar gestation weight gains between sows fed DDGS compared to those fed a corn-soybean meal diet. Furthermore, Song et al (2010) and Greiner et al (2008) reported that sows fed DDGS during lactation had similar BW change compared with those fed corn-soybean meal diets.…”

“…Even more, increased average daily feed intake as well as average daily gain of piglets was observed during lactation [23]. Feeding as high levels of DDGS as 40 to 50% could be reduced sow feed intake and litter performance [24]. Therefore, maternal proportions of RDP observed in this survey could be considered as secure.…”

“…This result is consistent with previous report [2] who indicated that litter size and piglet weight at birth were reduced by about 5 and 20% in gestative sows fed diet containing 33% DM RDP in comparison with that deprived of. However, according to [23,24] no effect was observed up to 30% DM RDP in diet. Even more, increased average daily feed intake as well as average daily gain of piglets was observed during lactation [23].…”

“…In addition, all sows in both the control and DDGS treatment groups lost BW during lactation. However, Greiner et al (2008) and Song et al (2010) reported that sows fed increasing concentration of 100, 200 and 300 g DDGS/kg gained BW during lactation. Sows are restrictively fed during gestation to prevent excessive BW gain, and are allowed to consume feed on an ad libitum basis during lactation in contrast to cover nutrient requirements for milk production and to limit the mobilisation of sow body reserves (Dourmad et al, 1996).…”

“…Wilson et al (2003) demonstrated that sows fed the DDGS diets during the gestation period also had a shorter weaning-to-oestrus interval than sows fed no DDGS during gestation. In the experiment by Greiner et al (2008) the weaning-to-oestrus interval was linearly reduced by the inclusion of DDGS in the lactation diet.…”
