The feasibility and effectiveness of Catch It, an innovative CBT smartphone app

Abstract: BackgroundThe widespread use of smartphones makes effective therapies such as cognitive–behavioural therapy (CBT) potentially accessible to large numbers of people.AimsThis paper reports the usage data of the first trial of Catch It, a new CBT smartphone app.MethodUptake and usage rates, fidelity of user responses to CBT principles, and impact on reported negative and positive moods were assessed.ResultsA relatively modest proportion of people chose to download the app. Once used, the app tended to be used mor… Show more

“…Although a lot of the studies were of RCT design, overall, they were deemed to be of low to moderate quality when assessed against Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment Tool [ 50 ]. Some studies were within-group types and therefore had more margin for bias as they had no control group or differing intervention to be used as a comparison [ 53 , 55 , 68 , 69 , 71 , 73 , 74 ]. One study was an unblended RCT [ 76 ].…”

“…Among the other relevant CBT-based apps reported in the literature thus far, Kinderman et al (2016) presented data on the effectiveness of Catch It, a CBT-based MHapp that coached users in a short cognitive reframing and reflection strategy. Significant increases in positive mood and decreases in negative mood were noted when comparing the first and second times the app had been used.…”

“…Participants in all the studies summarised above (Kinderman et al, 2016;Meinlschmidt et al, 2016;Mohr et al, 2017;Roepke et al, 2015) were experiencing significant depression and/or anxiety symptoms, so it is unclear whether the MHapps would be effective for users experiencing subclinical symptoms. This has important implications for the recommendation of MHapps to different users.…”

“…Apps can also provide evidence-based treatments recommended by clinical guidelines, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), which provide data on usage and adherence. 3 By contrast, passive data may be collected from a variety of sources. Smart electricity meters collect data that might be used to predict whether older patients have fallen or have a change in daily living pattern indicating they have run into problems.…”
