The extended solar neighborhood: precision astrometry from the Pan-STARRS 1 3π Survey

Abstract: The Pan-STARRS pathfinding telescope PS1 will begin a major set of surveys starting in 2008, and lasting for 3.5 years. One of these, the PS1 3π Survey, will repeatedly observe the entire sky north of −30 degrees, visiting every position 12 times in each of 5 filters. With single-epoch astrometry of 10 milliarcseconds, these observations will yield parallaxes for stars within 100 pc and proper motions out to several hundred pc. The result will be an unprecedented view on nearby stellar populations and insight … Show more

“…Initial reduction and processing of all PS1-MDS images are carried out with the PS1 Image Processing Pipeline (Magnier 2006;Magnier et al 2008). This includes standard reductions, astrometric solution, and stacking of nightly images as well as source detection and photometry.…”

“…This pipeline performs automatic bias subtraction, flat fielding, astrometry (Magnier et al 2008), photometry (Magnier 2007), and image stacking and differencing for every image taken by the system. The approximately one trillion pixels per night are processed in a massively parallel fashion at the Maui High Performance Computer Center.…”

“…Mask and variance arrays are carried forward at each stage of the IPP processing. Photometric and astrometric measurements performed by the IPP system are described in Magnier (2007) and Magnier et al (2008), respectively. Individual detections made on the difference images are copied nightly from the MHPCC and ingested into a MySQL data base (located at Queen's University) after an initial culling of objects based on the detection of saturated, masked or suspected defective pixels within the PSF area.…”
