The acquisition of quantifiers is a central topic in cognitive science. The present study investigated the emergence, frequency, and non-target-like production of the universal quantifiers all, every, and each in child English from a linguistic perspective, based on the data from longitudinal naturalistic observation of 10 English-speaking children and their caregivers. We found that the use of these quantifiers as adverbs or in adverbials generally appeared earlier, and was more frequent, than their use as (pre)determiners in early child English. We also found that input frequency exerts a great influence on some aspects of the acquisition of universal quantifiers, for example, the frequency of the predeterminer all, but there are still some patterns that cannot be explained by mere input frequency, such as children’s initial preference for using universal quantifiers in A(dverbial)-quantification and their non-target forms. Their initial overreliance on A-quantification may be explained by event quantification being cognitively less demanding than entity quantification, and their non-target productions likely result from their developing grammatical systems. We argue that the acquisition of universal quantifiers involves multiple factors, such as cognitive complexity, children’s developing grammatical systems, and input frequency, interacting with each other.

A quantificação é um tema de investigação ainda pouco explorado entre as línguas da família Tupi-Guarani. Vieira (1995) foi uma das primeiras investigadoras a realizar uma análise preliminar sobre os tipos de quantificadores empregados em uma língua desse grupo linguístico: o Asurini do Trocará. Já se vai mais de vinte e cinco anos desde essa publicação e até hoje ainda não surgiu nenhum outro estudo sobre a expressão da quantificação nessas línguas. O nosso objetivo neste artigo é bastante simples: resgatar a pesquisa inicial de Vieira, trazendo-a como ponto de partida para a realização de um estudo comparativo entre o Asurini e outras duas línguas geneticamente relacionadas: o Tupinambá e o Guarani Mbyá. Para fins da descrição dos termos quantificacionais encontrados nessas línguas, fazemos uso da distinção sugerida por Partee et al. (1987) entre dois tipos de quantificação: D(eterminante) e A(dverbial). A quantificação-D se refere aos elementos determinantes, ao passo que a quantificação-A engloba elementos de categorias sintáticas variadas, como: advérbios, verbos auxiliares e afixos verbais e nominais, dentre outros. Mostramos aqui, assim como já o fez Vieira (1995), que as línguas da família Tupi-Guarani sob investigação empregam somente quantificadores-A para expressar noções de cardinalidade e de quantificação universal. Esses quantificadores exibem escopo não-seletivo, podendo operar não só sobre predicados (eventos), mas também sobre NPs (indivíduos). Uma característica interessante dos quantificadores-A que expressam cardinalidade é a sua indeterminação categorial que permite que se realizem ora como advérbios ora como verbos. Essa mudança de categoria pode ser explicada pela Morfologia Distribuída (Marantz, 1997; Siddiq, 2009) que sugere que as classes das palavras são derivadas sintaticamente pela junção de raízes lexicais com núcleos funcionais específicos. Além de palavras independentes, os sufixos nominais e verbais são utilizados para expressar o indefinido “muitos” e o quantificador universal “todos”. Estes sufixos também são operadores não-seletivos que podem ligar qualquer variável disponível sob o seu escopo, como os argumentos absolutivos e o evento verbal. Vê-se, então, que noções quantificacionais importantes são codificadas nas línguas da família Tupi-Guarani por meio de quantificadores-A –advérbios, verbos e sufixos-, em detrimento de quantificadores-D.
