The expression of PDGF-BB predicts curative effect in locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma treated by radiotherapy

Abstract: Radiotherapy is the major approach and is well tolerated in locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). And nowadays, no effective biological markers have been identified for predicting the prognosis of patients with ESCC. Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is associated with a poor prognosis of various malignancies. The present study aimed to assess the effect of PDGF-BB on radiotherapeutic responses of ESCC and the underlying mechanisms of its roles in ESCC. Serum from 68 cases that receiv… Show more

“…The present study aimed to analyze the ER + breast cancer survival rate following the expression of PDGFB. In previous studies, the prognosis of patients with low PDGF-BB improved the progression-free survival and overall survival compared with that of the others in numerous human tumors, including colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, esophageal cancer and liver cancer (19)(20)(21)(22). Additionally, aberrant PDGFB expression is associated with the vascular mechanism in 4T1 cancer cells in vivo, but not with the direct proliferative promotion of breast cancer cells (23).…”

“…PDGF-BB facilitates the stem-like characteristics of OV6 + cancer stem-like cells (CSCs) by enhancing YAP stability ( 24 ). PDGFB downregulation by PDGFB shRNA suppresses cell proliferation and invasion by blocking the PI3K/AKT pathway in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cells ( 21 ). Autocrine PDGF/PDGFR signaling contributes toward the maintenance of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) through the activation of STAT1 in murine and human mammary carcinoma cell lines ( 25 ).…”

“… 19 , 20 Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is also associated with a poor prognosis of various malignancies. Er et al 21 found that the decrease of PDGF-BB expression in peripheral blood after radiotherapy can improve the prognosis of patients. It is speculated that radiotherapy would regulate the expression of cytokines through TGF-β/PDGF pathways.…”
