Free-liv~ng marine nematodes of the genus Ptycl~olaimellus build membranous tubes from detritus bound by released mucus. The mucus is produced by a ventral gland cell opening close to the lips and probably also from hypodermal gland cells along the body wall. The tubes are about 50 ,um in diameter, sinuous, and situated vertically down to l cm depth; they open at the sediment-water interface. These findings suggest that the nematodes may play a significant role at the interfaces by increasing pore water exchange and stabilizing newly sedimented detritus with excreted mucus.

The ultrastructure of the excretory-secretory system of Toxocara canis infective larvae is described. The system is composed of a single uninucleate cell forming two elongate columns that extend throughout the length of the worm up to the anterior portion of the intestine. The cytoplasm shows an abundant endoplasmic reticulum and an extensive Golgi complex from which many vesicles of variable density originate. The material of the vesicles is discharged into the lumen of an intracellular duct crossing the two columns of the gland cell. These ducts appear as sinuous canals surrounded by a series of small, interconnected cavities. The excretory ducts join by means of transversal canals which, in turn, flow into a common duct opening outside through an excretory pore.

Tube-dwelling has been recognized PreViOuSlY as a life-style for several meiobenthic species, but behavioural observation of living specimens has rarely been reported. The extent to which tubebuilding and tube-dwelling occurs within meiofaUna, and how they have influenced evolutionary and ecological processes as well as morphology within these oymisnis. is relatively unknown but potentially of great significance. In addition to direct obse.wation of tube-building and the occurence of tubes in natural habitats, the internal anatomy associated with tube-building in two nematode species (Ptycholaimellus jacobi, P. ponticus) and one harpacticoid copepod species (Stenheliapalustris) is the focus of this study. Special attention is given to the Secretory products, glands, and their association with secretory pores. Also, the role of meiobenthic tube-dwelling activities in relationship to their environment is extensive discussed.
