The Evolutionary Function of Awe: A Review and Integrated Model of Seven Theoretical Perspectives

Antonia Lucht,
Hein T. van Schie

Abstract: This narrative review aims to contribute to the scientific literature on awe by reviewing seven perspectives on the evolutionary function of awe. Each is presented with accompanying empirical evidence and suggestions for research investigating unanswered questions. Based on the existing perspectives, this review proposes an integrated evolutionary model of awe, postulating the evolutionary selection of awe through three adaptive domains: (1) social cooperation, (2) reflective processing, and (3) signaling suit… Show more

“…Consistent with the view that awe may serve important adaptive functions for individuals (e.g., Chirico & Yaden, 2018;Keltner & Haidt, 2003;Lucht & van Schie, 2023;Richesin & Baldwin, 2023), our studies present new evidence showing that sensitivity toward awe-inspiring visual experiences is present early in life. Children differentiate diverse types of awe-inspiring stimuli from other kinds of everyday stimuli, even when the comparison stimuli share some key features of the awe-inspiring stimuli in our studies (e.g., similarities involving nature, perceptual vastness, background music, and diversity of scenes).…”

“…In other words, awe is an emotional response that experiences the shock of an external stimulus and requires cognitive restructuring to adapt to it (Richesin and Baldwin, 2023). The characteristics of vastness and accommodation dictate that awe has a transformative ability to induce psychological changes and facilitate behavioural adjustments (Lucht and van Schie, 2024).…”
