The Evolution of Your Success Lies at the Centre of Your Co-Authorship Network

Abstract: Collaboration among scholars and institutions is progressively becoming essential to the success of research grant procurement and to allow the emergence and evolution of scientific disciplines. Our work focuses on analysing if the volume of collaborations of one author together with the relevance of his collaborators is somewhat related to his research performance over time. In order to prove this relation we collected the temporal distributions of scholars’ publications and citations from the Google Scholar … Show more

“…In the course of a collaboration, new ideas shape and eventually result in new discoveries and scientific publications [36]. As a result, collaborations impact researchers' scientific careers and their academic success [44,43,51,52]. For example, the centrality of a scientist in a collaboration network is associated with her success [51,52] and co-authorship strength is related to high productivity and citations [43,44].…”

“…This, however, cannot be obtained in the real world for the same technology and the same users in a common time window. Recent work has addressed a somewhat comparable question by asking how the success of a scientific author depends on his/her position in the co-authorship network [ 30 ]. For such work an extensive mining of the author databases, which is beyond the aim of the current work, is necessary.…”

“…Our work is inspired by a previous research work developed in [ 10 ], where they introduced a predictive model that maps social media data to tie strength concept. This approach was also used in [ 27 ] to assess how the co-authorship network is related to the research performance over time. In this section, we will summarize briefly some of the basic ideas built up to be applied in this new field of study.…”
