The evolution of water quality and nutrient condition in Lake Dongting in recent 30 years

Abstract: Abstract: Based on the 30 years monitoring data in Lake Dongting from 1986 to 2015,we evaluated the changing pattern of water quality and nutrient condition using single factor s evaluation and water trophic level index ( TLI ) . The water quality of Lake Dongting remained at Ⅳ level in the last five years and the percentages ofⅠ Ⅲ level declined significantly from 1986 to 2005. To• tal nitrogen( TN) and total phosphorus( TP) were the major influential factors on the water quality. Over the long•term preriod, … Show more

“…The lake as a whole is mildly polluted, and the main pollutant is TP (Xiong et al, 2016;Wang et al, 2020). In addition, the level of TN in the lake is also high, although TN is not considered in the water quality assessment.…”

“…Dongting Lake is the fourth largest lake in China and the only lake connected to Yangtze River in the MYR, covering an area of about 2580 km 2 , with high suspended sediment content and high turbidity [48]. Over the past few decades, the average TP concentration in Dongting Lake has increased from about 0.05 mg/L in 1986 to about 0.1 mg/L in 2015, showing a significant increasing trend, and TP has gradually become the main influencing factor on the water quality change in Dongting Lake [49]. As the TP concentration in Dongting Lake increases, more and more phosphorus will enter the Yangtze River, bringing challenges to the improvement of the Yangtze River's water quality.…”

“…On the one hand, the hydrological situation of the Yangtze River constantly changes the pattern of Dongting Lake [50,51]. On the other hand, the increase of industrial and agricultural pollution, the release of endogenous pollution and the reduction of water environment capacity in the Dongting Lake basin, and the significant increase of nutrients such as TP and TN in the lake will also challenge the water quality of the Yangtze River [49]. Further study is needed to determine the specific impact of Dongting Lake on the water quality of the Yangtze River.…”

“…In the past 30 years, the water quality of Dongting Lake has been on the decline, and total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) are the main factors affecting the water quality [13]. With the increase in TN and TP pollutant input, the water quality of Dongting Lake decreased, and the water trophic status was gradually close to the light eutrophication from the mesotrophic level [14]. Many scholars pay more attention to TP than to TN when studying the water environment and nutrient status of Dongting Lake.…”
