The evolution of the international business field: a scientometric investigation of articles published in its premier journal

Abstract: Macro-environmental trends such as technological changes, declining trade and investment barriers, and globalizing forces impacting both markets and production worldwide point to the heightened importance of international business (IB) and the relevance of IB research today. Despite this, a leading scholar has expressed concerns that the IB research agenda could be 'running out of steam' (Buckley, Journal of International Business Studies 33(2):365-373, 2002), prompting on-going introspection within the IB fie… Show more

“…The idea is that a word is defined by the context within which it occurs (Courtial, 1989;Smith & Humphreys, 2006) and words that co-occur reflect categories (i.e., concepts) with specific meaning (Leydesdorff & Hellsten, 2006;Osgood et al, 1957). The Leximancer algorithm has been used successfully in previous research to scientometrically describe and analyze text -for example, in corporate risk management (Martin & Rice, 2007), innovation (Randhawa et al, 2016), tourism (Scott & Smith, 2005), project governance (Biesenthal & Wilden, 2014), and behavioral research (Smith & Humphreys, 2006) -and in previous analyses of the history of journals based on the articles published therein -e.g., Liesch et al (2011) …”

“…Recent research papers reveal that Leximancer is increasingly used as a semantic mapping tool in qualitative research designs (Cretchley, Gallois, Chenery & Smith, 2010;Dann, 2010;Liesch, Håkanson, McGaughey, Middleton & Cretchley, 2011Hansson, Carey & Kjartansson, 2010Campbell, Pitt, Parent & Berthon, 2011;Hewett, Watson, Gallois, Ward & Leggett, 2009;Cretchley, Rooney & Gallois, 2010;Rooney et al, 2010). Such increased popularity stems from Leximancer having been validated as an appropriate knowledge discovery, qualitative research tool (Smith & Humphreys, 2006 when, for the purpose of analysis it may not be the case (for example; risk, risks and risking).…”

“…In the field of international trade much research has been conducted using SNA, including studies on the international trade of copper ore (Congcong 2010a), international wheat trade (Congcong 2010b), a longitudinal analysis of globalization and regionalization in international trade (Kim and Shin 2002), the persistence of structural inequality (Mahutga 2006), the structure and dynamics of international commodity trade flows (Smith and White 1992), and the mapping of small arms trade (Kinsella 2004) to name just a few. In conjunction with these SNA studies have been scientometric investigations (Liesch et al 2011) and several co-authorship studies including a wide range of literature reviews, including international trade theory and policy (Sen 2010), the role of international trade and investment in business growth and development (Harris and Li 2005), free trade or protectionism (Ma and Lu 2011), and the relationship between foreign trade and economic growth (Chen 2009). This research marks an important step in attempting to fill the academic void that exists in the field of international trade FTA negotiation research using the SNA technique.…”
